Watson - A Variant of Unknown Significance

The unexpected arrival of Irene Adler (Whoopie Van Raam) and her son Angus (Sebastian Billingsley-Rodriguez) who may, or may not, have been fathered by Sherlock Holmes introduces a case with the staff splitting up to diagnosis the patient's condition and also prove or disprove Adler's paternity claims. Although initially believing Irene's story, and see Holmes in her son, Watson (Morris Chestnut) begins to see the cracks realizing all of this is nothing more than one more scam in which Irene has involved an adept student.

The episode is notable for introducing Irene but also Mycroft Holmes (Vincent Gale) from whom Shinwell (Ritchie Coster) procures the last known sample of Sherlock's DNA (which it turns out is what Irene was after all along). "A Variant of Unknown Significance" is a fun episode that finally finds a sweet spot between Holmes' world and diagnostic medicine. While the choice to have Angus not be Sherlock's son (or even sick) is the obvious one, I think the other might have ultimately proved more interesting for the series moving forward offering a piece of his friend, and his old life, for Watson to hold on to.
