Uncanny X-Men #12

While the first few pages do play into recent events including the training of the young Outliers and and Rogue's concern about maybe being too hard on Jitter, Uncanny X-Men #12 is really a standalone issue that takes advantage of this group of X-Men setting up shop in Cajun country to offer a one-off story with ties to Gambit's past when a note appears for the X-Man.

The comic offers a story from Gambit's childhood involving a dangerous man for whom Gambit owes a debt he can never possibly repay (although present events do question how much help he actually offered the young Remy way back when). It appears the Vig's latest request is for Gambit to turn over one of the young mutants over to him, and here our hero draws a line. The art of single-story comics is a bit of a lost art in today's writing for trade paperbacks, but I'll give credit to Gail Simone and Gavin Guidry in delivering a fun issue that also offers a glimpse of a character's mostly untold past.
