We Live in Time

We Live in Time is a bit of a throwback, a solid film that shows the formula of throwing together two extremely likable stars and giving them a stage to perform is still a formula for success. For our pairing we get Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh as Tobias and Almut. The film jumps around in non-linear fashion to delve into the pair's relationship from their cinematic meet-cute (where she literally runs into him with his car) through the ups and downs of their relationship over the years.

The structure of the film allows to balance the highs and lows and avoid a film that could otherwise get pretty damn bleak if told in chronological order. It's no surprise that Pugh and Garfield and are good together, covering up flaws in the script and some of the more awkward transitions as the story moves through several years of their lives together. Although we get small roles here and there, it's really a two-person film and, even when things get a bit dark given Almut's medical diagnosis, it's an enjoyable film that keeps one foot rooted as much as it can in reality without getting lost in melancholy or schmaltz.

The special collector's Blu-ray includes commentary from director John Crowley and writer Nick Payne, a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the film, and six collectible postcards capturing various moments from the movie.
