Every time DC relaunches JSA there are questions about what version of the team you are going to use and, more importantly, when and on what Earth you are going to place them. The new volume mixes in both original and rebooted versions of characters on Earth-0 on the modern timeline (rather than on a separate Earth or during WWII).
With several of the bigger guns missing (Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and Dr. Fate all disappeared and are dealing with their own issues in the displaced Tower of Fate), it falls on Jade to lead the mishmash of heroes together which is a struggle that isn't helped by the super-villain Johnny Sorrow sewing animosity among the Society while disguised as Obsidian. For a first issue, JSA #1 could feel a bit more focused in reintroducing characters and their place in the current version of the DCU. Also, no Stargirl. However, it's a solid enough issue to kick-off a new series featuring real problems for the group to solve.
