Batgirl #1

Lady Shiva's arrival in Gotham City and her warnings that neither she nor her daughter as safe from a cult of assassins. Focused primarily on Batgirl's distrust of her mother, things pick up with the arrival of wave after wave of assassins and Cassandra discovers her mother is telling the truth (if not the whole truth) about an apparent shared enemy.

The comic does what it needs to do to set up the fractured relationship between the pair for new readers and reminding old ones of the animosity baked-in to their dynamic. The sheer numbers of their adversaries forces a team-up, although one Batgirl fights such a pairing for most of the issue (even getting some sucker punches in on her mom). Just how long can the two coexist, and how much longer and the truth behind the cult's motives will be revealed? With art by Takeshi Miyazawa, which I think fits both characters well, I'm willing to stick around to find out.

[DC, $3.99]
