Adapted from Riot Games' League of Legends universe, the First Season of Arcane: League of Legends focuses on origin stories for sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell) while exploring the class struggles between the utopian city of Piltover and the oppressed underworld city of Zaun. The first thee episodes of the series provide examples of the girls' childhood and how that life ended badly for all involved while the rest of the season picks up years later bringing the two sisters, each believing the other died years ago, together again. Also explored is the rise of scientist Jayce Talis (Kevin Alejandro) and his Hextech technology which will change the world.
One of the main goals of the season is to explore what made Jinx, one of the games' breakout stars, into the manic Harley Quinn-esque agent of chaos. Despite Vi's love for her sister, there are times even she can't argue about her sister's bad luck and awful decision making which we see many, many examples none more descriptive of her bad choices than the final moment of the season (literally ending with a bang). Themes of class and family run strong throughout the season, as does tragedy.
If I have a complaint with the season, it's that the Jinx storyline of finding her place in the world, and that of Vi and Caitlyn (Katie Leung) searching for both her and the stolen technology, work on an emotional level that the Jayce threads of science and politics sometimes lacks. The Blu-ray collects all nine episodes from the Netflix's series First Season along with a handful of behind-the-scenes featurettes including scene breakdowns of some of the season's biggest moments.
