While others conspire to keep them apart, the fourth and fifth episodes of the series are about cementing the unlikely romantic partnership between Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode). Unable to frighten Diana away, Ysabeau (Lindsay Duncan) must eventually cave and accept his son's love for the witch. It seems Diana may have friends after all. However, the infighting at the conclave will lead to Dian being whisked away from the safety of Sept-Tours ending on a cliffhanger.
While united, the enemies of Matthew and Diana are many and their struggles appear to just be beginning. "Episode 5" is also notable for Matthew's return to Oxford. There we get his discovery that confirms Diana is the most powerful witch to be born in generations and take a measure of revenge against Gillian (Louise Brealey) both for her betrayal of Diana and breaking into his lab while he was away.
