After dealing with the drama and searching for meaning and truth in the lives of the other characters, Gray and Vince are happy together and Ivory has started something good with Molly. That leaves things open for the odd man, er Ghost, out. On his birthday, Ivory takes his friend camping to search for the beast who killed him. The set up allows the comic to explore both the idea of ghosts and Matt himself (allowing us to see him before his death).
The conflict from the issue deals with the friends coming across a guy running from a poltergeist of a young kid. Helping the kid find his peace helps Matt find his own. And through that lens we get a much better understanding of how ghosts work in this reality and what can drive them. That along with a visit from a former flame provide just the kind of birthday present any ghost could want allowing him to find some perspective and peace with his death. Of course, there's still that end of the world thing to deal with...
