Joshua Jackson stars as Dr. Max Bankman who joins the luxury cruise ship The Odyssey for his first trip as the ship's new doctor. The "Pilot" sets up the basics of the series, introducing us to key members of the crew including its Captain (Don Johnson), and Max's two nurses (Phillipa Soo and Sean Teale) along with setting up the basic setup for the show with Max showing off his skills to his new subordinates and them showing him a few things about the unique environment aboard a cruise ship. That and the various quirky health issues of the week set what is likely going to be the template for the series.
The opening episode of Doctor Odyssey is largely fine. Similar to Royal Pains, except on a boat, the series sets up the idea of an overqualified doctor taking his maiden voyage aboard The Odyssey while literally setting sail on a new life. The reasons for him taking the job are explained to Avery (Soo). The show teases us with some romantic tension between the pair who, after an initial temptation, choose not to explore.
