Exploring the mundane, particularly through a dramatic rather than comedic lens is a challenging undertaking. Director Rachel Lambert's adaptation of Kevin Armento's play stars Daisy Ridley as an introverted office worker who often fantasizes about her own death. Friendly, but not friends with anyone in the office. Alone, but not necessarily looking to give up her solitude, Fran (Ridley) begins a friendship with a new coworker (Dave Merheje) whose attempts to break her out of her shell lead to mixed results.
Sometimes I Think About Dying is a quiet and contemplative film that may try your patience at times as it does quite enjoy reveling in day-to-day office life. Fran's fantasizes are lowkey and take up a smaller portion of the film than I expected as she's more detached from the world than actually suicidal. Instead the film focuses on the enigma of our lead character who gives us a slice of the human condition struggling with a mix of conflicting emotions for which there is no easy answer or solution.
