Reunited after their adventure in St. Louis, and with even more eyes on them than before, Percy (Walker Scobell), Annabeth (Leah Jeffries), and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) continue their quest running into not one but two gods before the episode concludes. During their meeting with Ares (AEW's Adam Copeland), the kids strike a bargain. For his help in getting them further west they agree to retrieve his shield... although the God of War forgets to mention that the shield is in the middle of a trap set by Hephaestus (Psych's Timothy Omundson) which will force them to leave one member of the quest behind.
The writing of the episodes continues to showcase a very Disney Channel level of unevenness, although "A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers" is certainly more successful than the previous episode. The best scenes involve Grover's discussion with Ares after he's left behind by his friends and Omundson adding a bit of gravitas to to the very small role which is also explained further in a bit of special effect magic. In terms of our main character, Percy shows he has it in him to make a big sacrifice, and Annabeth discovers she's grown more fond of the demigod than any quest for glory or recognition from the gods as she puts Percy's wellbeing above continuing the quest without him, touching the heart of Hephaestus and allowing their adventure to continue to Las Vegas.
