Justified: City Primeval - The Oklahoma Wildman

Justified: City Primeval doesn't wait to bring Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) together while using Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis), who apparently is the only lawyer in Detroit, to tie the two separate storylines from the first episode together. While the first meeting between the pair isn't memorable, the second leaves an impression as Givens beats Mansell up after finding him with his daughter. My guess would be Wilder would return with a legal angle to keep Givens, and th local cops, away from her client, but I'm also guessing egos on either side won't allow that to last. The episode also sneaks in Maureen (Adelaide Clemens) doing a little thinking for herself and likely Sweetie (Vondie Curtis-Hall) working on an educated guess potentially providing one or both leverage against Mansell later in the series.

Darkwing Duck #7

Fans who enjoy seeing Darkwing Duck get riled up need look no further than Darkwing Duck #7 and his first foray through the city's new museum of super-heroes which leads to in increasingly agitated state. The issue plays on the pettiness of DW who is perturbed not only by how much credit other heroes get in the museum but the lackluster state of his own exhibit as well.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Among the Lotus Eaters

The Enterprise is sent back to the planet Rigel VII where a failed mission forced a hasty extraction five years earlier. Discovery of cultural contamination on the Bronze Age planet necessitates the ship's return where they discover a crewman (David Huynh) left behind has made himself ruler of the planet and found a way to use the unusual radiation from a crashed meteor to his advantage. Complicating maters is that same radiation found both on the planet, and in the debris field, which makes people forget aspects of their lives, effecting both the landing party and the Enterprise crew.

Moon Knight: City of the Dead #1

Beginning with Moon Knight fighting off a cultish gang after a young boy, Moon Knight: City of the Dead #1 takes Marc Spector to Duat, the City of the Dead, to find and return the boy's soul to his wounded body. Not a well-known or often used location, the comic takes advantage of the city's deputation of Duat from the Moon Knight TV-series to explain its existence (although it expands on it much more than what we saw there).

The Lazarus Project - Episode 5 / Episode 6

All-in on his plan to force the Lazarus Project to reboot time, the fifth and sixth episodes of The Lazarus Project deal  with George (Paapa Essiedu) getting his hands on the nuclear bomb and the aftermath. Securing and detonating the bomb becomes tricky when another terrorist group is in control hoping to steal the detonator from him. More trouble involves a broken down truck, getting shot in the middle of nowhere, and eventually having to detonate the bomb far from any major cities. While all this is going on, George begins the process of framing Shiv (Rudi Dharmalingam) for events.

Red Sonja #1

A new volume of Red Sonja begins here in Vestfold with where the brutal High Priest Thord Varg has taken control following the death of the king. Although the narration from writer Torunn Grønbekk suggests he has no real interest in ruling this particular kingdom, he also has no problem sacrifice babies to the town's flame and rousing the crowds with speeches of victory over their enemies.

Futurama - The Impossible Stream

After a decade Futurama returns with Fry (Billy West) attempting to binge watch every episode of television ever. Despite the idiocy of the idea, the others are supportive even putting Fry into a suit to help facilitate his impossible goal. However, as he becomes addicted to the stream, but runs out of new content to watch, his friends will be forced to take drastic measures to create new episodes of All My Circuits for him.

Hellboy in Love #5

The five-issue mini-series concludes with  Hellboy and Anastacia in India looking for the Suaren Artea and a recently discovered chamber inside an unearthed temple to the demon Raktabija which leads to Anastacia to finding proof of the mysterious group's existence. However, there's new demonic trouble for both her and Hellboy when a woman Anastacia has seen previously on her search completes a ritual and sends demon spawn after the pair and their guide to deny the archeologist her prize.

Good Omens - The Arrival

Time has past since the end of the First Season of Good Omens and while Crowley (David Tennant) and Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) have both remained on Earth, they have decided to go their separate ways. However, the arrival of an amnesiac Gabriel (Jon Hamm) who disappears from Heaven and shows up wandering naked through the city and into the angel's book shop will reunite the unlikely pair once more. With the First Season relying on the source material for its storyline, this new season feels very much like the writers feeling their way with yet-unnamed new trouble related to Gabriel's amnesia, his reason for showing up on Earth, and what he may have been carrying in the empty box.

The Haunted Mansion Will Bore You to Death

Disney's original The Haunted Mansion is far from a great movie, but it does work as a serviceable family film featuring a family locked in a house full of ghosts. 20 years later Disney tries its hand at a new version of the film based on a Disney park ride. The result is a terminally boring film filled with a more eclectic cast than the original, and certainly a higher effects budget, but one that can never get out of first gear leaving you languishing with the kind of TV-movie you'd gladly turn off after ten minutes.

The set up this time involves a single mother (Rosario Dawson) and her son (Chase Dillon) who trick an odd assortment of other guests (LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, and Danny DeVito) into the house looking for help to break the curse and release the ghosts before the most evil among them claims another victim allowing it escape the house. The real victims here, however, are the audience, trapped and unable to leave the theater while being bored to death.

Rick and Morty: Heart of Rickness #1

The new four-issue Rick and Morty mini-series kicks off with Summer accidentally spoiling a deal between Rick and some space gangsters to get his hands on some crystals. As Morty points out, he has plenty of crystals but this are special... somehow. On the run, their sabotaged spaceship crash lands on an alien world where they discover an anti-technology Rick has taken control and has the trio thrown into a pit.

Almost Paradise - Breaking Badminton

After uncovering an underground badminton club and drug smuggling enterprise, Alex (Christian Kane) and Ernesto (Art Acuñ)  go in undercover as an unlikely team in the second episode of Almost Paradise's Second Season. Alex's interest in the case comes from a local friend who was killed after discovering the drug smuggling and chose to try and blackmail his way out of his heavy debts. The episode is most memorable for Alex and Ernesto's time on the courts, including Alex's kill shot that embeds a shuttlecock into an opposing player's leg, and Kai (Samantha Richelle) calling a late audible that ends up saving their lives and taking down the drug ring.

Eddie Murphy & The Haunted Mansion

With Disney's remake about to hit theaters, we take a look back at the original film based of the Disney Park ride. The Haunted Mansion offers us Eddie Murphy and Marsha Thomason as realtors Jim and Sara Evers, who, along with their two children (Aree Davis and Marc John Jefferies), take a detour before their weekend away to examine an old mansion only to become trapped inside by an evil ghost butler (Terence Stamp) who has noticed the resemblance between Mrs. Evers and his master's former bride (also played by Thomason).

Justified: City Primeval - City Primeval

Eight years after the series finale of Justified, Timothy Olyphant returns as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens who left Kentucky for the swampy backwaters of Florida raising his daughter Willa (Vivian Olyphant). Set fifteen years after the end of the original series, Givens may have changed locations but his straight-shooting abrasive personality remains intact (something he's passed on to his daughter). However, events of the series won't focus either on Florida or Kentucky but instead Detroit where Givens finds himself temporarily reassigned after a series of comic misadventures attempting to deliver his daughter to camp which are brought up in court by defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis).

The Rocketeer: Den of Thieves #1

After their ups and downs in Europe in The Rocketeer: The Great Race, Cliff and Betty have returned home. For Betty her career is on the rise with a role in a major motion picture. Cliff returns to piloting but misses his days as the Rocketeer which, given the state of the jet pack at the end of the last mini-series, appear to be finished for the time being. Some good advice from Peevy leads Cliff to embrace the new life that has opened before them. However, things are about to change.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

"Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" offers the usual pairing of Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and an alternate timeline version of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) who end up in the 21st Century searching for someone or something that has altered the timeline to prevent Starfleet from ever being formed and led to a darker future for humankind. We get the usual Star Trek bits of working to fit into the time period and making use of current technology, and the episode helps explain the addition of Pelia (Carol Kane) to the crew earlier this season as her long life allows La'an to go to a younger version of the character for help (and leaves someone other than La'an with some knowledge of what happened).

Oppenheimer

It's been 13 years since Inception, a film which showed off director Christopher Nolan's innovation, technical skill, and storytelling at its peak. Since that point, Nolan's track record has been spotty at best. While the technical skill in Oppenheimer is expected, the joy from the film is Nolan abandoning some of his trademarks, such as the overbearing booming score which at this point had become a caricature of itself,  in order to focus more squarely on a character-driven story based on a complicated man standing at the crossroads of history. The fact that it isn't immediately in contention for best movie of the year has more to do with the troubled circumstances of its presentation rather than any failures of the film itself. More on that later.

The Lazarus Project - Episode 4

While Shiv (Rudi Dharmalingam) begins to suspect what his coworker is up to, and trails him halfway around the world, George (Paapa Essiedu) goes all in on his plan to cause a world ending event which would force the Lazarus Project to reset time and bring Sarah (Charly Clive) back to life. We get cat-and-mouse play throughout the episode leading into a full on chase with George crossing another line both in killing Shiv. This is followed up quickly by his cold and calculated decision to lead another member of the Project to his death in order to hide all traces of his movements prior to a time reset (where he'll have an entirely new set of problems to deal with).

Darth Vader #36

This is a damn goofy story. After loosing control of his Force abilities, Vader enlisted the help of Dr. Aphra to find a magic shield which he hopes will somehow restore them. News of his condition has resulted in droids from the Dark Lord of the Sith's past forming a sort of unofficial union and plotting his demise. As others have learned before them, attempting to take on Darth Vader doesn't go well for them.

My Adventures with Superman - Adventures of a Normal Man (Part Two)

As the opening episode introduced us to Clark Kent (Jack Quaid), the second-half of the premiere of My Adventures with Superman focuses on delivering us Superman. With a definite anime-styling, we see both young Clark and older Clark confront the buried alien ship that brought him Earth. While he abandoned a search for answers as a child, now his need to understand who he is forces him into the ship allowing him to unlock a costume obviously designed from the character's New 52 run which Martha Kent (Kari Wahlgren) makes some immediate necessary aesthetic changes to before allowing her son out in the world.

Moon Knight #25

Moon Knight #25 offers an oversized issue that doesn't lead to any important revelations, wrap-up the ongoing story, or offer the unexpected. Instead we get an oversized issue featuring Moon Knight going after the Black Spectre, the trap the latest villain lays for him involving a handful of Marc Spector's former foes, in a B-movie version of Knightfall, Moon Knight cuts a swath through them before being saved by one of the Black Spectre's minions who had second thoughts after leading Moon Knight into a trap.

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #10

Mystery, Inc. is on hand for the launch of Silver St. Cloud, a ship with proprietary technology from WayneTech allowing it to scan the ocean floor "with incredible precision." Bruce Wayne has spared no expense in making the cruise fun for the guests with mystery-themed rooms in each of the ship's cabins. However, when pirates show up to steal the ship there's a new mystery for the gang to solve and enough danger for Bruce Wayne to retreat to his cabin and become Batman.

Almost Paradise - The Magellan Cross

After defeating his nemesis and reconnecting with his daughter at the end of last season, Alex Walker (Christian Kane) gets pulled into a new case to help Kai Mendoza (Samantha Richelle) and Ernesto Alamares (Art Acuña) to investigate the death of a local priest, the fire which burned down the church, and the theft of a priceless artifact. Also attempting to take his doctor's advice to get back into the dating pool, the case is complicated by Alex's feelings for a local woman (Max Collins) who quickly becomes one of their leading suspects. However, the one hiding in plain sight is the easiest one to see coming (except for the police).

The Blacklist - Raymond Reddington

After 10 seasons, The Blacklist comes to a close not with a bang but a whimper. The two-part finale involves the FBI hunting down their former confidential informant Raymond Reddington (James Spader) while others including Congressman Arthur Hudson (Toby Leonard Moore) continue to throw shade at the task force unintentionally allowing Red to escape. We get the arrest, and shooting, of Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) along with the misdirection of Red in the first episode. Derrick Williams is added to the mix as the new person to not listen to the team and go off half-cocked, although his character has no resolution and is simply forgotten by the final half-hour.

Scream VI

The sixth entry in the Scream franchise follows Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) to college. The film opens in the expected way with a woman (Samara Weaving) being stalked on the phone and then killed, although we do get a twist with the killer (Tony Revolori) immediately being revealed and then himself stalked and killed by a different Ghostface killer out to frame Sam for his crimes and punish the sisters for what he believes are their crimes.

Young Jedi Adventures - The Junk Giant

Taborr (Trey Diaz Murphy) and his friends return for "The Junk Giant" as Kai Brightstar (Jamaal Avery Jr.) and Lys Solay (Juliet Donenfeld) discover they are responsible for the thefts from the local junk yard, building themselves a large droid to help with their schemes. While the Jedi fight off the droid, injuring it enough for Taborr to abandon it, in the end Kai takes the lesson he's learned about objects having hidden value to heart and convinces the robot to turn to their side ultimately giving Jinara (Cree Summer) a new friend. Unfortunately, the structure of the episode means Nubs (Dee Bradley Baker) gets far less screentime than the Jedi, for the second adventure in a row, spending time cleaning up the junk yard while his friends get to have more fun.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Ad Astra per Aspera

Throughout its various iterations and decades on television, Star Trek has always enjoyed a good courtroom drama from time to time. "Ad Astra per Aspera" picks up the thread of last season's cliffhanger by offering us the trial of Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn). Due mostly to his stubbornness, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) is able to enlist the help of one of the universe's best attorneys (), although her personal backstory to Number One does create some conflict. Although other characters get small moments here, such as Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh's (Christina Chong) struggle to discover how Una's secret was discovered, this is really an episode for Rebecca Romijn who doesn't disappoint.

Knight Terrors #1

In a series of one-shots we've seen the heroes of the DC Universe being attacked by their own nightmares. Knight Terrors #1 kicks off the main story of the crossover event with Deadman, inside the stolen body of Batman, facing the man responsible. Claiming to be a god, but really just a man changed by Lazarus Rain, a new villain called Insomnia is trapping both heroes and villains in their own nightmares. To further his plans, he seeks the Nightmare Stone.

Panhandle - One Billboard Outside Boggsville, Florida

The paths of  Bell Prescott (Luke Kirby) and Cammie Lorde (Tiana Okoye) cross again the show's second episode with Bell needing help looking into the actions of his wife before her death and Cammie (Tiana Okoye) looking for some more easy wins to boost her stock and get her out of her current position of manning the local speed trap. There are some fun moments such as Bell accosting a man at a miniature golf course, but with no case of the week to solve the structure of the episode doesn't hold up nearly as well in the pilot, although we do get surprise visitors for both Cammie and Bell, one who confirms Bell suspicions about Cammie and one who offers Bell some secrets about his wife.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Creating a six-hour action movie and splitting it into two parts is unbelievably self-indulgent. Thankfully, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is worth it (although we'll have to  reserve full judgement until next year's release of Part Two). The seventh entry into the franchise once again finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team out in the cold on their own on a race to a prize with the safety of the entire world at stake. This time the enemy is both an AI capable of crippling the world with disinformation and its disciple, a spy with a past tied to Hunt's life before he ever joined the IMF.

While I enjoyed Mission: Impossible – Fallout, I don't think it stands up as well to multiple viewings as the previous two films which continue to be the apex of the series. Dead Reckoning not only returns the supporting players from the previous films such as rogue spy Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) and Hunt's reliable pals Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames), but it also adds Hayley Atwell to the mix in a role that nearly steals her the film.

The Lazarus Project - Episode 3

George's (Paapa Essiedu) road to betrayal begins here with an exploration of Janet (Vinette Robinson), the former member of the group who Archie (Anjli Mohindra) alluded to earlier in the season. Along with a present day meeting between George and Janet we also get flashbacks to her repeated year of hell and the births and loss of countless versions of the same child. While her motives in help George are somewhat circumspect, her pain is obviously real and the visceral lashing out of Rebrov (Tom Burke) at the world is easier to understand. The episode ends with George holding a detonator in his hands one-step closer to the end of the world and the resetting of time which will bring back Sarah (Charly Clive), but we've already seen some suspicion from the Lazarus Project on their newest recruit so will he get the chance to change the world, and, if so, can he actually go through with it?

007: For King and Country #3

The first-half of 007: For King and Country #3 deals with James Bond's rescue of Gwendolyn Gann which she then needs to immediately return the favor as Bond gets pinned down by 006 in helping to clear her escape. It's from 006 the comic introduces the idea that there's some looming secret Gann is keeping from Bond, which will be further suggested at the end of the issue as well.

My Adventures with Superman - Adventures of a Normal Man (Part One)

The first episode of My Adventures with Superman introduces us to Clark Kent (Jack Quaid), Lois Lane (Alice Lee), Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid), and Perry White (Darrell Brown). After a short intro with young Clark discovering his powers in Smallville, we move forward several years to Metropolis and Clark and Jimmy's first day as interns at The Daily Planet where they meet Lois and quickly get pulled into her search for a big story involving stolen robots. While we don't get Superman in costume here, we do get Clark defending Lois and Jimmy in a hoodie in the episode's big action sequence against a series of killer robots, and Lois coining the moniker which he will eventually accept.

Darkwing Duck #6

What begins as Darkwing Duck and Gosalyn (dressed up as his new sidekick) attempting to bring in the resurrected Dr. NoGood who has brainwashed the children of St. Canard takes several twist and turns including Darkwing even temporarily allying himself with Megavolt (which goes about as well as expected as it turns into a double-cross against our hero).

The Blacklist - Arthur Hudson

In the final episode before the two-part series finale, Congressman Arthur Hudson (Toby Leonard Moore) exposes the truth about the Task Force to the Attorney General getting it shut down and a manhunt for Reddington (James Spader). Unable to capture him, thanks in part to a warning from Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq), Red goes free. Knowing he needs to be captured, and those with the most knowledge of the man are the same task force that he just shut down, the AG gives Harold (Harry Lennix) and his friend a new mission, and a way to avoid prosecution, in capturing Raymond Reddington for the United States Government.

Green Arrow #3

The problem with basing an entire comic around a mysterious secret kept from both characters in the comic and from the readers is that once revealed, if it turns out to be dumb as fuck, the entire house of cards you built collapses in on itself. That's what happens in Green Arrow #3 as Ollie and Lian are pulled into the future to join Connor Hawke and the Legion of Super-Heroes where it's revealed an older version of Oliver Queen allowed Amanda Waller to play interdimensional hop-scotch with his entire family for something they might do on one particular timeline.

Secret Invasion - Betrayed

The third episode of Secret Invasion is only a marginal improvement over the first two episodes of the series It may reveal Gravik's (Kingsley Ben-Adir) big plan of creating Super-Skrulls but it doesn't do much else. It teases us about the relationship between Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Varra (Charlayne Woodard) without exploring it. It kills off G'iah (Emilia Clarke) before she can become interesting, and gives Fury and and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) the opportunity to bicker like old lovers while stopping the Skrulls force an attack on an infiltrated nuclear submarine.

Tiger Within

In his final performance, Edward Asner stars as a Holocaust survivor who befriends a homeless teen (Margot Josefsohn) unwanted by either of her divorced parents and angry at the world. The odd couple pairing from screenwriter Gina Wendkos and director Rafal Zielinski offers the framework for some frank conversations across a multi-generational divide on how one chooses to live.

Art imitates life with a young actress just getting started learning from one on his final film. Tiger Within isn't a great film; it struggles to sting together a handful of individual scenes and build that into a fully realized tale. The final act also falls short ignoring the complicated situation Casey finds herself by suggesting finding her courage will magically solve all of her problems (including paying rent and making her family suddenly functional?). Although her life is changed by the friend she makes, Casey's journey is just starting leaving us with an underbaked film that limps weakly to the finish line after showing the promise of something more.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Usagi Yojimbo: WhereWhen #4

The crossover event continues as the Turtles, the Neko Ninja, and Usagi and his friends battle their way to Dr. WhereWhen's fortress encountering some of his new mechanical monstrosities in the form of giant spiders and a dragon. They aren't the only one to encounter Dr. WhereWhen's clockwork creations as Zato-Ino and his daughter Ichiko also run into the foot soldiers in the woods and an entire legion on them is about to overwhelm the camp of Lord Noriyuki whose army is stalled licking its wounds and burying their dead before continuing on their march towards Lord Hikiju.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957 - Fearful Symmetry

Set in India in 1957, the Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1957 - Fearful Symmetry one-shot has Hellboy investigating a number of unusual animal attacks at a small village not far from the University of Sagar which leads to a reunion with Ginny Payne (shown in the 2019 film) who, as a doctoral student at the university, will act as his guide for his stay. Fearful Symmetry is a fine tale, but isn't a must-read for any but the biggest Hellboy fans.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Broken Circle

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off its Second Season not with delving into the fallout of the arrest of Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and her impending trial, which is briefly mentioned but almost immediately shelved, but instead picking up the thread of Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh's (Christina Chong) universal walkabout. With the ship in space dock, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) has left to find a lawyer for his friend leaving Spock (Ethan Peck) in command when La'an's call for help arrives from a key planet to both the Klingons and the Federation warning of dangers to the fragile peace.

Murder City

Released directly to Tubi, Murder City is your typical B-movie action flick starring Luke Cage's Mike Colter as a disgraced cop who finds his family being squeezed by a local gangster (Stephanie Sigman) after he is released from prison. We see a little of Neil's (Colter) on the job skimming prior to his arrest when playing back-up to his father's (Antonio Fargas) drug deal when both are busted by the DEA. Fast-forwarding through his stay in prison, we only see his release on-screen, the story picks up with new troubles for Neil from the psychotic Ash who basically blackmails him into going to work for her by leveraging Neil's family.

Citadel - Infinite Shadows

The theme of trust and secrets slowly being revealed makes up the majority of Citadel's third episode. "Infinite Shadows" offers a flashback into the first meeting between Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) on a mission in the Alborz Mountains to retrieve a deadly virus a decade ago. Now ten years later, in one of Citadel's former safehouses, the questions of trust the spies asked each other years ago are as relevant today as they were then. Meanwhile, Manticore tortures Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci) for information and access into Citadel technology.

Fables #159

As the comic continues to creep towards its conclusion, Tinkerbell gets a larger role here making an appearance in all three stories. First, she delivers some dangerous items into the hands of Cinderella and Fabeltown, appearing to be working, when she can, at cross purposes to Peter Pan. Next, we see her with the broken Pan who orders her to kill the entire Wolf family leading to a death and cliffhanger conclusion to close out the issue.

The Rising - Episode 4

As the police continue their investigation into Neve's (Clara Rugaard) murder, her family struggles to deal with both her loss and the discovery that her step-sister Katie (Robyn Cara) was boinking Neve's boyfriend (Solly McLeod) on the night of the party. Meanwhile, Neve's ghost enlists the help of Alex (Nenda Neururer) to understand the strange stone shrine in the woods and the odd effect it has one her. The emotional toll of Neve's death, and the revelations it leads to, continues to be the strength of the show four episodes as Maria (Emily Taaffe) lashes out,  Daniel (Alex Lanipekun) struggles to keep the family together, Joan (Karen Henthorn) attempts to offer comfort, and William (Nicholas Gleaves) finds some comfort in unexpected places.
