Near the beginning of the pandemic filmmaker David Siev, who, like his siblings, moved back home to support his parents and the family business they started decades earlier, begins to record a film which will grow into a portrait of the American experience of an Asian-American family through their struggles and triumphs of 2020 in the decidedly white Conservative small town of Bad Axe, Michigan.
An intimate look which could only be achieved through being part of the lives which he documents, Bad Axe embraces the uncertainty of uncertain times for the family while touching on family history, fear, partisanship, racism, the American dream, internal family conflict, the immigrant experience, love, and community. It's unlike anything else I've seen this year and easily one of the best films of the year.
