Following the events of last season's finale with the machinations of Evil Morty (Justin Roiland) to corrupt the Portal Guns and destroy of the Citadel of Ricks, Rick (Roiland) and Morty (Roiland) return for a bit of a reboot episode to kick off the new season that also looks into the past of both Rick and Morty. Attempting to reboot the Portal Gun, Rick accidentally reboots the portal users sending himself, Morty, and Jerry (Chris Parnell) all back to their original universes leaving both Beths (Sarah Chalke) and Summer (Spencer Grammer) to set up a beacon and call them home.
The episode ends with the family reunited on a new Earth, but before we get there we'll see Morty explore the Cronenberged dimension and discover what happened to his family after he abandoned them, Jerry will get stuck in a bit of a sitcom loop on C-131, and Rick will return to the home where he lost his wife. The return visits remind our characters of the horrors they have survived. Rick's journey also reignites his hatred for the Rick who destroyed his life who also makes an appearance suggesting maybe we'll see more of him this season.
