Both Lucifer's (Tom Ellis) attempts to earn the support of his siblings and the murder of the week, and how it relates into Michael's bigger plans, take a backseat to the death of a major character in "Is This Really How It's Going To End?!" Even after Lucifer and Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) manage to carve out a bit of retribution, the loss of Dan (Kevin Alejandro) is felt by all. Twisting into the wound is the discovery by Lucifer and Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) that Dan's soul didn't make it to Heaven and that the mercenaries who killed him did so while looking for the final piece of A blade to deliver to Michael.
Continuing to show the change in Lucifer over the series, our devil calls in every favor owed to him, without a second thought, in an attempt to find Dan before Detective Douche is tortured and killed. Even though that effort fails, that won't prevent Lucifer from making other selfless choices in the season finale. The episode takes its time with the fallout of Dan's death, offering a prolonged epilogue including his funeral, Lucifer punishing his killers, and a bit of therapy with Linda (Rachael Harris) working on his current state of mind. Heading into the final episode of the season, Lucifer prepares for war, leading to an outcome no one sees coming and paying off on breadcrumbs laid earlier in the season.
