It's been awhile since I sat down and watched The Boys. A few minutes into Third Season premiere reminds me why. I'll admit, the show works as gritty fun of awful people doing awful things to each other, but it's hard for me to stay invested in a show that doesn't have a single likeable character. Following the events of the previous season, Hughie (Jack Quaid) has a desk job and is now running Butcher (Karl Urban) and The Boys, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) is offered a major promotion, and Homelander (Antony Starr) is still in damage control mode for dating a Nazi.
"Payback" checks in with the various characters, reminds us how freaking terrifying a pissed off Homelander can be, and introduces a couple of small nuggets of information which will break the uneasy calm the various characters have accepted for the time being. For Hughie, it's discovering his co-worker (Claudia Doumit) is hiding both super-powers and murderous tendencies. For Butcher, it's the discovery of a weapon powerful enough to possibly kill Homelander. Along the way we'll also get a movie premiere, a fun moment with Karen Fukuhara at the keyboard, the capture of an Atom/Ant-Man style supe (Brett Geddes) whose predilection for cocaine and kinky sex turns out bad for his boyfriend, and an even bloodier reveal in an alley for Hughie (giving him something else to worry about other than the possibility of his girlfriend's ex joining The 7).
