DC League of Super-Pets

Centering around Superman's (John Krasinski) super-dog Krypto (Dwayne Johnson) learning to accept his owner's affection for Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde) and discover how to make his own friends in a group animals (Kevin Hart, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, and Diego Luna) who all become super-powered through a mad guinea pig's (Kate McKinnon) use of Orange Kryptonite, DC League of Super-Pets offers your basic animated kind of mildly diverting fun with the Justice League being completely unprepared to deal with super-villain animals and the need for our unlikely heroes to unite and form the League of Super-Pets.

While not likely a film I'd return to, and would prefer DC to drill into the untapped potential of Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! (think Justice League meets Tiny Toon Adventures), fans of DC (or anthropomorphic characters in general) should have a fine time.

The Bad Guys

Although never as cool as it thinks it is, 2022's animated feature The Bad Guys featuring a gang of thieves attempting to be good for a change, or at least pretending to, provides its share of laughs over its slick and fast-paced 100-minute running-time.

Sam Rockwell voices Mr. Wolf, the head of the gang who he gets into a jam and needs to get them all rubber-stamped as reformed in order to commit their biggest score. While the crew (Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, and Anthony Ramos) is up for the con, Wolf has a shocking discovery he might actually want to go good for real leading to the internal conflict within the group. As a fan of heist flicks, The Bad Guys has limited appeal. Although it isn't likely a film I will return to soon (if ever), there's enough here to make it an easy recommendation.

Artemis: Wanted

The one-shot Artemis: Wanted clears up the past events of the Amazon on the run as Donna Troy and Cassie Sandsmark track down Artemis for her murder of Hippolyta (an action the spirit of Hippolyta reveals was part of a larger plan). While Donna is out for blood, the younger Wonder Girl wants answers. There's also the story of the town where the Amazons find Artemis, where a former Amazon and her daughter are caught up in a curse along with the rest of the townspeople.

Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death #1

The creators of Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land reunite for another four-issue mini-series featuring a young Hellboy's adventures. The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense has relocated to Connecticut, much to the dismay of our title character who is also fighting some kind of mystery illness that appears tied to the forgotten memories of his island adventure.

The Old Man - III

The biggest piece of the third episode of The Old Man is to confirm the identity of Dan Chase's (Jeff Bridges) daughter, not only as a living person (and not a hallucination like that of his ex-wife), but also reveal her larger role in the events that are occurring. It's an interesting choice to make to reveal her identity so early in the series, and I think there was still plenty of mileage to get out of her being more of a nebulous character. That said, her conversation with Zoe (Amy Brenneman), even though it ultimately doesn't convince her to hit the road with Dan, tells us everything we need to know about the Dan/Zoe relationship.

Usagi Yojimbo #29

Miyamoto Usagi and Yukichi travel north to deliver the jade dragon the recovered from thieves from the previous issue the Part One of "The Secret of the Green Dragon" when the pair come across a courier who they are unable to save from Komori Ninja. Reaching the town they find the merchant dead and a corrupt official willing to accept the jewels in possession but not the story of any actual Komori.

Blood & Treasure - The Soul of Genghis Khan

Blood & Treasure returns for a Second Season with Danny (Matt Barr) and Lexi (Sofia Pernas) being pulled into a search for the the standard/banner which Genghis Khan rode into battle with which became known as the Soul of Genghis Khan. Lost for years, some mysterious group which attacked both the Vatican and killed their old frenemy Jay Reece (John Larroquette) in prison is after the standard for their own twisted needs. And helping them, unknown to Danny or Lexi, is Reece's daughter (Victoria Diamond).

Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #3

Three more bloody tales of Moon Knight in black, white, and red are collected in Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #3. The craziest, and least interesting story for me, finds Moon Knight fighting aboard a spaceship in "Astronauts." It's weird but not as much fun as Moon Knight in space sounds. However, it's the other two tales where you will get your money's worth.

The Terminal List - The Engram

The first episode of The Terminal List introduces us to Lieutenant Commander James Reece (Chris Pratt) and the operation overseas to take down a terrorist which goes bad, leaving almost all of his men dead. Reece gets his bell rung during the ambush by the locals, showing signs of a severe concussion throughout the remainder of the episode and setting him up as an unreliable narrator for what will follow. After returning home, Reece's accounts conflict with the audio recordings of the missing, leading him to believe someone has doctored the mission logs (but we are never given a viable reason why someone would do this as events aren't changed overall, only the member of the unit who triggered the trap is different than Reece's recollections).

Defenders: Beyond #1

A leftover spell from Doctor Strange calls forth a new group of Defenders in Defenders: Beyond #1. We begin with the reluctant Blue Marvel and add a confused America Chavez looking for answers about her past, a female Loki (obviously meant to remind readers about the Loki TV-show) who alone seems to relish the adventure, the mostly non-descript Taaia, and the Avenger Tigra. We don't get into what the threat is large enough to call on the Defenders as the first issue is mainly about the reluctant characters (all except for Loki) being forced together into action by events well outside of their control.

SkyMed - Line Indoc

The second episode of SkyMed furthers the various internal drama of the nurses and pilots including Lexi (Mercedes Morris) beginning her new life of a pilot and facing animosity from those other in line for the open position (who are never called out for shirking their responsibilities?), guilt for accepting the position while keeping quiet about why the plane crashed, and hazing in her new role by a distracted Bodie (Aason Nadjiwon) whose secrets will be revealed concerning both his new job and pregnant girlfriend. 

Fables #153

While we get short appearances by Cinderella and our new Jack the Green, the main focus of Fables #153 is on the children of Bigby and Snow White who their father sends off separately to each have a fantastic adventure on their own. Snow isn't overly enthused with her husband's decision and it turns out she may have valid concerns.

Fairfax - Career Day

Career Day comes to Fairfax and, not unexpectedly, things quickly get out of control. While both Derica (Kiersey Clemons) and Benny (Peter S. Kim) get interns with Girlbossier, and Derica is quickly fast-tracked as the new urban look for the company, Dale (Skyler Gisondo) gets assigned to Off-Brian and Truman (Jaboukie Young-White) has an unexpected reunion with Cerise (Camila Mendes) in the AI world of Welch's. Each one has their own separate adventure, although Derica's is the most notable for blackmailing the CEO (Annie Murphy) of the company for real change rather than just the appearance the corporation was all too pleased with.

Moon Knight #13

In the fallout from his war with Zodiac, Moon Knight turns his pent-up frustration and attention on the vampire known as the Tutor who is the head of the vampire pyramid scheme which turned Reese. There's plenty of action as Moon Knight cuts a path through vampires on his way to the Tutor, however the framing of the issue comes from the vampire's discussion with Taskmaster who the Tutor asks for advice and attempts, and fails, to hire to deal with his Moon Knight problem.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

From Jet Li's The One to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, movies have enjoyed playing with the ideas of multiple realities and the differences of one character across a multiverse of possibilities. Everything Everywhere All at Once offers a new spin to the concept with the various versions of a character flowing through them, giving them specific skills their other selves have acquired, and offering glimpses to how their own lives may have turned out differently.

Michelle Yeoh stars as despondent laundromat owner Evelyn Wang, who, we are told, is the least interesting version of Evelyn across any reality. However, if reality is to be saved, it is this Evelyn who will need to step-up when not dealing with being audited by the IRS and various family drama including one version of her husband (Ke Huy Quan) springing a divorce while another introduces her to the absurdities of the multiverse.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - All Those Who Wander

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds overcorrects the follow up to the all too cute "The Elysian Kingdom" with a horror episode that brings back the Gorn and sees the exit of not one but two major characters. Certainly better than the previous episode, "All Those Who Wander" goes a bit too far to the other side of the spectrum with an Alien-esque story of Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and a handful of other character skulking around a crashed ship avoiding rabid alien creatures who impregnate their hosts and burst out of their bodies. The results are memorable, if nearly as far from classic Trek tone as the previous episode.

Starting to set the stage for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles event The Armageddon Game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Armageddon Game: Opening Moves #1 focuses on Oroku Saki and Kitsune preparing to do battle with her brother the Rat King who is gathering his forces for a brutal battle.

Daredevil #1

Matt Murdock is dead to the world as Daredevil (who no one remembers is Matt Murdock) and Elektra prepare to leave New York and take their fight to the Hand. Before leaving the city, however, Daredevil spends one final night fighting crime with Spider-Man and tying up various loose ends. There's not as much Daredevil/Spidey interaction as I would have liked here (especially between two men who have made deals with devils to hide their secret identities), but the pairing still works.

Only Murders in the Building - The Last Day of Bunny Folger

In a somewhat odd episode that is neither fully from the perspective of our podcasters, nor that of murder victim Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), the appropriately titled "The Last Day of Bunny Folger" examines events from the day of Bunny's death including her refusing to give up her prestigious board position to Nina Lin (Christine Ko) and her failed attempt to make peace with Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez). Despite the shifting perspective of the episode not quite working, and the parrot tease turning out to go nowhere interesting, the episode does provide a new lead suspect for our podcasters while also pointing out the sad truth that had they been a bit more neighborly Bunny would still be alive.

The Mandalorian #1

A straightforward adaptation of the first episode of The Mandalorian, The Mandalorian #1 is exactly what you would expect introducing us to bounty hunter Din Djarin and his acceptance of the job which will change his life forever. Fans of the character may enjoy themselves, and there is enjoyment in seeing the character come to life on the comic page, but nothing new is added here, or given more depth or insight, which might pur you to seek it out.

The Old Man - II

Looking for a spot out of the way to rest up and heal, Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) makes an unexpected new friend in Zoe (Amy Brenneman), a beautiful if troubled woman renting out her guest-house to the spy on the run. There are several great scenes of the two of them together including the final scene of the pair in her kitchen which is set up earlier in the episode. Our spy on the run doesn't tell her much about his life, although he does mention his wife. Now that a real connection between the two has been made, what happens to her when the government comes calling?

MacGyver (2016) - The Complete Series

All five seasons of the MacGyver reboot are collected here featuring Lucas Till as Angus MacGyver working for the covert Phoenix Foundation solving problems all over the world with the help of his friends Jack (George Eads), Riley (Tristin Mays), Bowser (Justin Hires), and in later seasons Desi (Levy Tran) and Russ Taylor (Henry Ian Cusick).

More high-tech than the original MacGyver, often with some kind of hacking need by Riley, the reboot saw more team action in the field but still worked in MacGyver's various on-the-fly inventions to get out of tough jams. The show was hit hard by the COVID-19 outbreak, which was worked into an episode after filming began again,  leading to some shortened and truncated final seasons.

Dragons: The Nine Realms - Downpour

Tom's (Jeremy Shada) discovery of some Tidal Dragons comes in handy when an out of control forest fire threatens the area. After chastising him for hiding things from the rest of the riders, Alex (Aimee Garcia) figures out a way to lead the dragons to the fire and help put it out before it reaches ICARIS. The smoke helps hide the dragons for the most part, but although the group manages to stop the fire their activity doesn't go completely unnoticed. Along with the new dragons, "Downpour" also introduces a potential new adversary for the riders in the irresponsible Buzzsaw (Haley Joel Osment) who started the fire but blames the mysterious lightning bird he sees in the smoky aftermath for his own misfortune.

Perhaps my favorite web series of 2022 was watching WrestleTalk's Luke Owen and Pete Quinnell go mad playing the new GM mode for WWE2K22 for partsFUNknown. Here are the collected vidoes in all their glory.

The Villains of Valley View - Trust No One

Realizing that Hartley (Kayden Muller-Janssen) now knows their secret, various family members all attempt to blackmail the only person they've met trustworthy enough to keep their secret before, during, and even after they start screwing with her life. The episode is full of awkward attempts by the family to get, or frame, something bad on their landlady's daughter only to discover she's smarter than they are (so is everyone ever born, if the events of the first two episodes are any indication). The show closes with Hartley still agreeing to keep their secret despite the family's lame shenanigans and continues to tease Jake (Reed Horstmann) as the black sheep for being the least evil of the family, although he's still far from being a good guy.

Batman #125

A new creative team takes over in Batman #125 as the Penguin begins attacking Gotham's City's top 1% leading to the still wealthy, but no longer uber-rich, Bruce Wayne attending a gala which will be targeted by the villain leading Batman to walk right into Penguin's (pretty dumb) trap.

SkyMed - Pilots And Nurses And Bears, Oh My!

The first episode of the Canadian drama sets up the world of nurses and pilots working for an air ambulance service servicing those in remote locations in northern Manitoba. Our introduction to the world comes in part with the arrival of a new nurse, Hayley (Natasha Calis) running literally and figuratively from medical news to the edge of the world. We're also introduced the the various other nurses and pilots including those looking at the situation only as a springboard to bigger things and those who have carved out a permanent home for themselves.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Elysian Kingdom

"The Elysian Kingdom" is the first major misstep in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' First Season. In what feels like a holodeck episode (set in a time before the holodeck existed), most of the Starfleet officers on the ship start acting like characters in Rukiya's (Sage Arrindell) favorite story. The sets of the Enterprise get marginally redressed to act as locations in the book and only Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) and Hemmer (Bruce Horak) are aware that something odd is happening. The end goal of the series is to write Rukiya off the show in such a bizarre deux machina that you feel disappointed given all the set-up over the course of the season. As for the actors playing out the tale with limited sets and props, the episode has a community theater feel to it that doesn't fit with anything we've seen before (and hopefully won't see again).

How Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Should Have Ended

Beverly Hills Cop II

Throwback Thursday takes us back to 1987 and the return of Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) to the big screen. Although a box office hit, the sequel wasn't as successful as the original film with a bit of a convoluted tale of a gang of super-thieves (most notably Brigitte Nielsen, Dean Stockwell, and Jürgen Prochnow) bringing Axel back to town when his friend Bogomil (Ronny Cox) is shot in one of several separate opening scenes the script stumbles through before getting our star back to California. 

I quite often enjoy Tony Scott, who took over directing here, but the film (based on a story conceived in part by its star) is more of an Eddie Murphy film than a Tony Scott film. Scott does bring a slicker look to the sequel that is missing some of the rougher edges of the first Beverly Hills Cop. The film also goes for a bigger action storyline with standalone comedic bits dispersed across the film rather than what felt more organic the first time around.

Once and Future #27

While the appearance of the sword in the stone moves all the various Arthurs to action, Duncan, Bridgette, and Rose do what they can to keep the would-be kings from claiming a throne until Christmas, Once and Future #27 also turns its sights back on the deformed Galahad and his quest for the Grail. The character has been on the periphery of the comic for quite awhile, but hasn't been a major player. Here the disheartened warrior gets the encouragement he needs to finish his quest which is achieved but the story doesn't exactly end in the manner his mother had hoped.

Only Murders in the Building - Framed

"Framed" centers around the painting found in Charles' (Steve Martin) apartment. Although the podcasters don't learn who put it there, or why they want to frame them for Bunny's (Jayne Houdyshell) murder, the painting itself provides some answers with the arrival of Bunny's mother (Shirley MacLaine), who like the artist, once had an affair with Charles' father (Jeffrey Emerson). The painting, which turns out to be the replica rather than the original, only creates more questions for our intrepid amateur detectives who may be helped, or possibly be led astray, by Bunny's parting gift to Oliver (Martin Short).

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #294

"High Stakes" continues at the not-so-undercover Joes struggle to stay alive on Cobra Island. More than half the issue is set aside for Helix and Dawn's fights against the evil Revanche B.A.T.S. disguised as waitresses before doing a bit of snooping underneath the casino and finding many, many more.

Asking for It

The first feature from writer/director Eamon O'Rourke has some interesting ideas and a solid enough cast to explore them. Sadly, Asking for It never quite figures out what it wants to be or how to get there. While there are flashes of a revenge story following the previously-cheery Joey (Kiersey Clemons) joining a group of militant women (Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Leslie Stratton, Radha Mitchell, Leyna Bloom, and Lisa Yaro) on an Indian reservation after being date raped by a longtime acquaintance (Casey Cott), Asking for It isn't a revenge story. It also isn't a character study or drama. It's easy to focus on what the film isn't, but much harder to nail down what Asking for It is.

Baymax! - Kiko

The second episode of Baymax! follows the same formula of the first with the personal healthcare companion attempting to help someone who doesn't initially want Baymax's (Scott Adsit) help. This time around it's elderly Kiko Tanaka (Emily Kuroda) who Baymax attempts to help exercise to help her various ailments and get over her fear of the public pool next door. At first we get the robot's wackier attempts proving she doesn't need to be afraid of the water before tricking her into a bit of exercise and leading her into the pool where the truth about her doubts and fears come to the surface. As with "Cass," Baymax is eventually able to help and leaves another patient better than the robot found them.

Transformers: Fate of Cybertron

The one-shot Transformers: Fate of Cybertron wraps up the IDW ongoing Transformers storyline (which only kept my interest off and on since it began back in 2019) with the Autobots leaving Cybertron to the Decepticions as agreed, but not before Megatron takes a few last swings at Optimus Prime and attempts to capture and keep all the Autobots as his prisoners to witness the glory of Cybertron under his rule.

Beverly Hills Cop

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to 1984 and the birth of the action-comedy. Originally a far more straight action film that at one time was a vehicle for Sylvester Stallone, Beverly Hills Cop became a much more humorous break-out role for Eddie Murphy cementing him as a bankable movie star and arguably carving out a new niche for the action-comedy (with the script being rewritten on the fly while the film began shooting under director Martin Brest).

Murphy stars as talented, but reckless, Detroit police officer Axel Foley who heads to Beverly Hills after an old friend (James Russo) is killed. Without the support of cops back home, or the California authorities, Foley begins his own investigation into his friend's former employer (Steven Berkoff) who he believes is smuggling bearer bonds and drugs through customs.

The Old Man - I

An old adage for stories like these is how much trouble you can get into when you don't let sleeping dogs lie. The opening episode of The Old Man introduces us to relatively normal looking Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) whose time in hiding has come to an end when an old file is reopened and agents are sent to find and collect the agent of the CIA who disappeared decades before. I'll give the show credit in casting Bill Heck as a younger version of the character in flashbacks who fits perfectly into what the show needs (at least for this episode). While we see glimpses into the skills Chase had, he isn't John Wick or Bryan Mills, he struggles with dealing with the far younger agents sent after him.

Darth Vader #24

Using her knowledge of Darth Vader's identity to her benefit, Sabé leads Vader and an Imperial regiment after a local corrupt governor working with Crimson Dawn in creating a new weapon capable of extracting living energy. And, it turns out, the machine is capable of (at least temporarily) stopping a Dark Lord of the Sith as well.

Fairfax - The Circle of Hype

A trip to the Fairfax Flea Market leads to revelations for each of the kids as Truman (Jaboukie Young-White) learns to enjoy the moment when playing with a mom band, Dale (Skyler Gisondo) and Benny (Peter S. Kim) find something unexpected on the shady side of the market where older brands have been shunned, and Derica's (Kiersey Clemons) purchase of a new jacket leads to immediate hype, hallucinations caused by dehydration, and then eventually emotional insight and a chance meeting.

Halo - Allegiance

"Allegiance" offers the tease of a peaceful happy ending for Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber) and Makee (Charlie Murphy) following their shared experience with the artifact. Then, all goes to hell. Dr. Halsey (Natascha McElhone) corrupts the other Spartans and attempts to steal Master Chief and the artifacts, and Dr. Keyes (Olive Gray) makes a discovery about Makee's recent history and allegiances that reminds her of the evils of humanity and makes it impossible for her to leave the Covenant behind. The only good news for John by the end of the episode is that Cortana (Jen Taylor) chooses him over Halsey's orders and helps to stop the doctor from getting her hands on the Spartan.

Darth Vader - Jedi Hunter

This parody is only slightly less ridiculous than the plot of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - The Serene Squall

Although the episode relies on a twist you'll likely see coming, "The Serene Squall" has the feel of a classic Trek adventure with the Enterprise fighting space pirates on the edge of Federation space. Themes from the season continue to be played out here including Spock (Ethan Peck) and  T'Pring's (Gia Sandhu) relationship and the tease of Nurse Chapel's (Jess Bush) feelings for the Enterprise's Science Officer. Jesse James Keitel is well-cast here as the main guest-star whose character needs to be insightful and empathetic to Spock but also to turn on a dime when the plot calls for it.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Old Man Whittier

Beware of houses with locked cellars, their own graveyards, and family crypts. Set in the mid-1980s, the new Hellboy one-shot features Hellboy being invited by Catherine Whittier to examine her ancestral home. While the creepy broken down house doesn't look like much initially, it hold darkness in its depths which has just been waiting for a member of its bloodline to return.

The Villains of Valley View - Finding Another Dimension

The new Disney+ sitcom The Villains of Valley feels like a mix of 3rd Rock from the Sun and Fuller House. The opening episode of the series, complete with lame jokes and laugh track, introduces a family of super-villains hiding out in Texas after getting on the wrong side of the League of Villains. In the opener, the family's mad scientist dad (James Patrick Stuart) makes a dimensional portal gun out of the microwave where his children (Isabella Pappas and Reed Horstmann) accidentally send their land lady's (Patricia Belcher) happy-go-lucky daughter (Kayden Muller-Janssen). Wackiness, or what settles for wackiness, ensues. Yeesh. 

Seven Secrets #18

Seven Secrets comes to a close with the reborn god taking on the rampaging demon inside Amon. Seven Secrets #18 wraps up the overall story with an unexpected twist of Caspar teaching a god new tricks and returning things back to a status quo (even salvaging the traitors back from the dark side).

Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #6

The six-issue mini-series concludes with a reprinting of another classic Usagi Yojimbo story. "Lone Goat and Kid," which has provided the title to the mini-series, features the disgraced Yagi now working at an assassin and his son Gorogoro travelling from town to town avoiding assassins sent by the unscrupulous Counselor Wakame who comes up with a new plan to put Miyamoto Usagi in his path and see what happens assuming any outcome would be favorable to his cause.

Only Murders in the Building - Persons of Interest

Only Murders in the Building returns with a Second Season with Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) as persons of interest in the murder of Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell). The celebrity of their arrest creates interest in each member with Charles getting asked to appear as a supporting character in a new Brazzos show, Oliver getting propositioned by Amy Schumer (playing herself) to take the podcast to Hollywood, and Mabel's art grabs the eye of a new friend (Cara Delevingne). However, despite their plans to leave the world of murder behind, events will eventually pull them back in.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Phase Four, by far the most experimental and unpredictable phase of the MCU, continues with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) earning his fourth standalone film (moving him past his tie with Captain America and Iron Man). Writer/director Taika Waititi returns for a follow up to Thor: Ragnarok choosing to keep the same tone and humor of that film. If Ragnarok was a 9 on the wacky scale, Love and Thunder is a 12.

After a quick introduction of our villain (Christian Bale) on a mission to kill gods, and speeding through a montage of Thor's time with the Guardians of the Galaxy, we get the God of Thunder's final team-up with the space heroes before returning home to Earth where we'll get a number of familiar faces including Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) now wielding Mjølnir, Brunnhilde (Tessa Thompson), and Korg (Waititi) who narrates off-and-on throughout the film.
