On his father's birthday, Barry (Grant Gustin) comes across a murder caused by a fire metahuman. An overwhelming amount of evidence, including motive and opportunity, points to recently-released two-time loser Jaco Birch (Max Adler). However, Barry isn't sure the police have the right man and continues to investigate the crime while being haunted by memories of his own family torn apart by a father incarcerated for a murder he didn't commit. While Barry is able to eventually prove the man's innocence, and prevent him from doing something that would send him back to Iron Heights, Team Flash isn't able to find the meta behind the attacks.
"The Fire Next Time" follows one of the show's most-used tropes, Barry following his gut despite what everyone around him believes or what the evidence appears to say. Thankfully, this is one of those times he's led by his heart rather than going off half-cocked on some weird plan. One of the problems with a show like The Flash continually adding characters is you have to find stories for them. The episode's B-story centers around tension at the Citizen between between Allegra (Kayla Compton) and Iris (Candice Patton), and Allegra and Taylor (Rachel Drance), about what kinds of stories the paper should be printing. Sadly, the B-story isn't nearly as interesting as what is happening in the rest of the episode.
