"In a Tree" offers another dead end, this one quite literal. After dealing with the killers sent after him, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) heads to New York to get the information his brother was collecting from his co-worker with benefits Molly Beth (Lara Jean Chorostecki). Sadly, she's killed, and Joe's research disappears, as Molly dies in his arms on the subway platform. However, Reacher does find one clue left by his brother notes that leads to connection with the EPA.
In terms of ongoing threads, there are several that are touched on here. The importance of animal feed is brought up again, but our characters will not yet make a connection to the counterfeit money laundering. There are also more flashbacks to Reacher as a child. We get the explanation of Reacher's action as a soldier overseas where his instincts led to brutal vengeance for those abusing young boys. And, perhaps not least important, we also see Reacher and Roscoe (Willa Fitzgerald) take their relationship to the next level just as things are about to get more dangerous for them both.
