Legacies - The Story of My Life

Legacies returns from its mid-season hiatus still focused on our dead trio attempting to get out of Limbo and Hope's (Danielle Rose Russell) missing humanity as she shows up in Professor Vardemus' (Alexis Denisof) classroom, in a fun reveal, to ask his opinion on the mystic crypt she's been keeping Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) inside. Eventually Lizzie escapes, but the revelation that Hope is her sire creates a new relationship between the pair as Lizzie can no longer harm Hope and must follow her commands (which the show immediately begins having fun with). Both this storyline, and what unfolds back at the Salvatore School, open a new storyline for the series on the subjects of gods.

The Human Target #5

The latest issue of The Human Target is by far the least linear of the series. While spending time with Ice, and preparing to meet the Martian Manhunter, Christopher Chance thinks back on his past and remembers the events of his childhood which put him on the path to becoming a Human Target and his training with a version of Saturn Girl who taught him not to hide his secrets but see into the minds of others as they probe his own.

What's obvious here is how quickly Chance and Ice have fallen for each other, as his few remaining days continue to slip away. However, that hasn't stopped him from pursuing one last mystery as the clues seem to be leading back to Ice's best-friend who may have used her feminine wiles on J'onn to help with her plan. Before the end we can see a reckoning for Chance and Ice adding another bittersweet layer to events.

Dragons: The Nine Realms - A Hole New World

And now there are two. When Tom Kullersen (Jeremy Shada) sneaks away to spend time with his dragon, who earns the name Thunder in this episode, Jun (Ashley Liao) follows him discovering the hidden world below only to get trapped in a crystal chamber. To escape, she'll need to make a connection with a two-headed dragon who will eventually accept her as its dragon rider. Mostly centered around Jun and her dragon, and Tom and Thunder fighting off some Gembreakers, other characters only make token appearances her including Alex (Aimee Garcia) who finds a way go get Tom outside the perimeter without setting off the alarms.

Legacies - The Complete Third Season

The Third Season of Legacies continues to focus on Malivore as the Necromancer (Ben Geurens) attempts to bring back the creature. Much of the season also deals with Hope's (Danielle Rose Russell) reaction to the loss of Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) whose return would be teased in a number of ways. We also see the exit of Rafael (Peyton 'Alex' Smith)  as a core character and the introduction of a new character in the muse Cleo (Omono Okojie) whose past connection to Malivore makes her an ally, albeit one with secrets, and the struggle to keep the school open when many parents pull their children out of a place where monsters attack on a daily basis.

All 16 episodes are collected on DVD. Highlights of the season include the Star Wars inspired episode, Josie (Kaylee Bryant), Hope, and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) spending time in a cult, and a musical episode

Cyrano

While it may not be my favorite adaptation of Edmond Rostand's 19th Century play, Cyrano proves to be a perfect vehicle for Peter Dinklage who shines as the title character. Our brave and witty protagonist yearns for the beautiful Roxanne (Haley Bennett) only to see her attentions fall on the gaze of a strapping young soldier (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) instead, who Cyrano agrees to help woo the woman they both love while hiding the depth of his true feelings from them both.

All the basic trappings from the story are here including Ben Mendelsohn as yet another, more villainous, rival for Roxanne's affections and the humorous balcony sequence in yet another stylish period piece from director Joe Wright. Added to the mix are a number of musical numbers which vacillate between additions or distractions from the main plot at various points in the tale.

The Book of Grogu - From the Desert Comes a Stranger

For the second episode in a row, an episode of The Book of Boba Fett is largely hijacked for a story setting up a Second Season of The Mandalorian. This time, rather than follow Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) on a job we get the Mandalorian's arrival at the Jedi Temple in search of Grogu and the young apprentice training with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Where the last episode belonged to the Mandalorian, this one belongs to Grogu who must decide if he will stay and complete his training as a Jedi or return to his life with the Mandalorian. I have seen the argument made that this second appearance cheapens Luke's appearance in The Mandalorian, and there is certainly a case to be made. However, the larger complaint is that it doesn't really fit on The Book of Boba Fett.

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red #7

Red Sonja: Black, White, Red follows up one of the strongest issues of the black-and-white anthology with one of its weakest. The most interesting story of the three, "Sonja's Gambit" involves a drugged Sonja tricked into a game by Queen Thamyris where Sonja finds herself as a figure on a chessboard with other living players forced into a game of life and death. Although it's not clear if Sonja did obey the rules of the game, exactly, she still manages to win with the help of another pawn.

Wolf Like Me - Episode 2

For the second episode in a row, Mary (Isla Fisher) crashes into Gary (Josh Gad). This time it's with a coffee rather than a car. And, after sharing another moment together she runs again, leaving Gary to chase her and learn her unbelievable secret. Other than brining the pair together again, the episode also explores Gary's past shame and his fears about his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) who has an attempted suicide early in the episode. Gad continues to give a strong performance here as a man at the end of his rope, who has found some comfort in a complete stranger carrying around no small amount of pain as well.

Reacher - In a Tree

"In a Tree" offers another dead end, this one quite literal. After dealing with the killers sent after him, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) heads to New York to get the information his brother was collecting from his co-worker with benefits Molly Beth (Lara Jean Chorostecki). Sadly, she's killed, and Joe's research disappears, as Molly dies in his arms on the subway platform. However, Reacher does find one clue left by his brother notes that leads to connection with the EPA.

WWE Day 1 (2022)

One of the better WWE "premium live events" in recent memory, WWE Day 1 offered a major shake-up to the card with news breaking that morning that Roman Reigns (who was the sole wrestler on the original promotional poster for the event) had tested positive for COVID. This caused the cancelling the scheduled main event and adding challenger Brock Lesnar to fatal four-way match making it a fatal five-way as WWE seemed determined to get a major title on Lesnar no matter what.

The unexpected shake-up of the card helped wake WWE from it's sleepwalking booking style of the last six months (although sadly the practice would resume once Roman Reigns returned from his short hiatus). The result was some genuine surprise over a WWE show which fans have seen damn little of recently.

The Endgame - Pilot

Feeling like it was inspired more than a little by The Blacklist, the first episode of NBC's The Endgame introduces us to a super-criminal (Morena Baccarin) in control of a vast global network who allows herself to be captured the the United States Government to further her own plans and put herself in the path of a single agent (Ryan Michelle Bathe). While the heads of the various agencies are at first smug at the prize they've snared, they soon realize who is in a trap when Elena Federova (Baccarin) masterminds a number of bank heists across the city while still under FBI lock up.

Usagi Yojimbo #26

The second-half of the two-part "Crossroads" finds Miyamoto Usagi catch up to the honor-less warriors who have been attacking and robbing those on the road, and decides to take all six of them on by himself. We've seen Usgai beat better odds before, but he underestimates the warriors and without the timely arrival of Yukichi things might have turned out differently for our hero.

Dragons: The Nine Realms - First Flight

Well this is an unexpected series? Set more than a thousand years after the various movies and TV-shows that make up the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, comes Dragons: The Nine Realms. Set in present day, our main character is precocious teen Tom Kullersen (Jeremy Shada) who relocates with his scientist mother (Julia Stiles) to the ICARIS research station investigating the Kullersen Fissure which holds a secret no one has guessed: a pathway to a world of dragons. Obviously a modern interpretation of a very familiar character to the franchise, Tom will be the one to discover a dragon and unearth a whole new world. Or, to be more precise, a much older one.

The Amazing Spider-Man #89

Ben Reilly has disappeared. Beyond's Queen Goblin is still attacking The Daily Bugle. After leaving Peter in the hospital, convinced he's still not ready, Black Cat arrives to make the save. However when that fails, Peter arrives in the nick of time to save both Black Cat and Mary Jane.

Although we don't see him in action, other than a quick save to save a confused Black Cat from taking a 60-story swan dive onto the pavement, The Amazing Spider-Man #89 offers us Peter Parker back in costume for the first time in several issues. With his stand-in missing, the comic falls back on an old Spidey trope with our hero out-gunned and his back against the wall. Can Spider-Man, still far less than 100%, save the day? Or will his return be short-lived and need an even longer hospital stay to recover this time?

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero - Saturday Morning Adventures #1

If you listen carefully while reading the first issue of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero - Saturday Morning Adventures you can almost hear the 80s cartoon's theme song humming from the pages. Designed to look and feel like an episode of G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero, even with a "Something to Know" segment in the epilogue, G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero - Saturday Morning Adventures #1 has Aladdin's lamp fall into the hands of Cobra.

Hawkeye - So This Is Christmas?

Hawkeye doesn't skimp on action in the finale was we get Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) vs. Yelena (Florence Pugh), Echo (Alaqua Cox) taking some vengeance, and our two archers struggling to stay alive against wave after wave of baddies thrown their way by the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). There's trick arrows, characters jumping off a buildings, and the Kingpin shrugging off everyone's best shots. Hell, even the ridiculous swordsman gets into the action, albeit not on the side you would expect given events of previous episodes.

Seven Secrets #14

Canto's betrayals continue in Seven Secrets #14 as he secures more of the secrets for the cause, as Canto and Amon maim and murder more of their former friends to acquire the most dangerous of all the secrets.

The Worst Person in the World

If there's a weakness for me in writer/director Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World it's that I never come to love the lead character of Julie (Renate Reinsve) nearly as much as the writer nor the characters who cross her path. Don't get me wrong, Reinsve is terrific here in the role of a woman who abandons careers and relationships at the drop of a hat while searching blindly for something she can never quite articulate. I'm never won over to root for or against Julie's choices; I'm simply along for the ride.

Marry Me

With a pair of likable stars and a braindead romcom plot, Marry Me is pretty much exactly what you would expect. The unlikley pairing between celebrity Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) and schoolteacher Charlie Gibert (Owen Wilson) comes about through convoluted means when his friend (Sarah Silverman) drags him to Kat's live concert where her live engagement goes sideways due to her fiancé's (Maluma) infidelity and she marries a random member of the audience instead.

The saving grace to balance the inherit weakness to the plot is the charm of the two stars. And Lopez and Owens are good here as characters who seem smarter than to get themselves mixed up in such a ridiculous circumstance. An American version of Notting Hill with a heavy amount of social media and brand perception thrown in, Marry Me is far from a must-see, but if you are forced to sit down for a romcom, you could certainly do worse.

The Book of the Mandalorian - Return of the Mandalorian

For the first of two episodes The Mandalorian hijacks the six-episode run of The Book of Boba Fett. Hey, it's only fair given Boba Fett's (Temuera Morrison)  attempts to upstage on the character on his own show, right? As an episode of The Mandalorian, "Return of the Mandalorian" makes sense (even if it feels like a step backward for the character). As an episode of The Book of Boba Fett, it feels very much out of place. But, seeing how The Mandalorian is the superior show, I'm willing to enjoy the ride.

Moon Knight #8

With Marc Spector having been beat up and incarcerated by the Thunderbolts as part of the ongoing Devil's Reign crossover, Hunter’s Moon has set up shop in the ruins of the Midnight Mission. On a tip from Detective Flint, our stand-in goes in search of the presumably resurrected Stained Glass Scarlet who has returned with some strange new powers and begun a murder spree.

Angel #1

The reimagined Buffyverse continues in a new series for Angel who is now a TV detective with Cordelia while his friends continue to fight monsters and things that go bump in the night in his absence. Angel #1 gives us a look at Angel's life on-set while the action from the comic comes from Fred (who apparently is now a Slayer?), Spike, and Wesley taking down a mummy. Things go fairly well, until Wesley gets stabbed with a cursed dagger.

Wolf Like Me - Episode 1

The opening episode of Wolf Like Me introduces us to widower and struggling single father Gary (Josh Gad) who literally crashes into Mary (Isla Fisher) in a car accident. Aside from having a way to calm Gary's emotionally-troubled daughter (Ariel Donoghue), Mary also catches Gary's attention for her kind ear and odd behavior. The show's opener teases the idea of Mary's condition, more strongly in the final minute where she races home hoping to beat sundown and lock herself away, without confirming she is indeed a werewolf.

Darth Vader #20

Using the list provided, Darth Vader begins killing off suspected members of Crimson Dawn. Knowing that only half the list is accurate before starting to paint a bloody swath all the way to the Emperor's own chambers doesn't deter the Dark Lord of the Sith. Is this something he's proving to his Master, or to himself?

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild

Originally conceived as a TV-series, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild becomes the sixth film in the Ice Age franchise. Despite the title, the main character of the film isn't the one-eye adventurous weasel Buck (Simon Pegg) but instead the irresponsible possums Crash (Vincent Tong) and Eddie (Aaron Harris) who leave the rest of the Ice Age regulars and set off to prove they can make it on their own.

The pair's journey leads back into the Lost World where a Protoceratops  (Utkarsh Ambudkar) is planning on taking over with an army of Raptors. Sticking close to Buck and his old friend Zee (Justina Machado), by far the most interesting character on-screen, Crash and Eddie cause chaos with their mindless antics while eventually learning how to help.

Reacher - Spoonful

While anyone with answers continues to either go missing our show up dead, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) discovers some answers from his brother's co-worker offering the first clue into the counterfeiting which is happening in Margrave. It will take most of the season for Reacher and his friends to grapple just how the counterfeit operation works, but it's clear that all roads continue to lead back to to Kliner Industries.

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #11

Returning to the Gotham Museum of Culture, where the series began, Batman and Mystery, Inc. reunite for another case. Our detectives are forced to shutdown a gala at the museum prematurely when a mask from the Detectives Exhibit is stolen and ghosts appear to scare off the guests. "Helping" on the case is the Creeper who was in the neighborhood to cover the gala as reporter Jack Ryder but transforms into super-hero trouble-maker/detective to solve the case.

Naomi - Enigma

After discovering that her parents knew she arrived from another world, Naomi McDuffie (Kaci Walfall) sets out to learn as much about her murky origins as possible. The flashbacks to "Enigma" are underwhelming to say the least, especially compared to how the reveal works in the original comics. I'm not sure if Naomi's parents are still hiding more details from her (like say one of her parents also not being from this world) or if the episode's writing is simply substandard and will continue to recon story and plot at random as the series has done repeatedly since the first episode to offer underwhelming reveals.

Death on the Nile

Writer/director/star Kenneth Branagh returns to reprise his role as Hercule Poirot in this follow-up to 2017's adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express. The adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile isn't as successful, in part due to source material not being as strong this time around and in part for some questionable creative decisions.

Parallel Mothers

For a film that centers around a plot point that would be right at home in any soap opera, Parallel Mothers provides a surprisingly strong drama. Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit are strangers who meet in the hospital, both giving birth to their first child. Each will take home a boy, but what they won't realize for quite some time is that each mother was given the other's son.

It's Janis (Cruz) who begins to suspect the truth when the father (Israel Elejalde), a flirtatious archeologist with a wife and no real interest in a more permanent relationship with the photographer, sees no resemblance in the child to anyone in his family. A chance meeting with Ana (Smit) brings the characters back into each others orbit as Janis' suspicions are realized and a gnawing guilt over the truth begins to color all that will follow.

The Book of Boba Fett - The Gathering Storm

Another episode that primarily focuses on an extended flashback, "Chapter 4" offers us Boba Fett's (Temuera Morrison) discovery of the wounded Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), his decision to save her life, and the beginnings of the pair's working relationship involving reclaiming Slave I from Jabba's Palace and taking some revenge on both the Kintan Striders and the Sarlaac. Sneaking into, and escaping from, Jabba's Palace is given the most time in the episode getting us closer and closer to who Boba was at the time of his first appearance in The Mandalorian.

Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #2

Continuing the tie-in to the larger Devil's Reign arc, Elektra finds herself pitted against Kraven the Hunter. Hoping to use old secrets against her, Kraven is shocked to discover Elektra has revealed all to Daredevil. Although it never really ends, the actual fight takes less than half the issue with various flashbacks to Elektra's past, revealing a painful truth to Matt Murdock, and Kraven finding a new type of leverage to force a rematch.

Hawkeye - Ronin

"Ronin" is notable for people telling Kate (Hailee Steinfeld) to stay away from Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner). This includes her mother (Vera Farmiga), Clint himself, and Yelena (Florence Pugh) who shows up in Kate's apartment for a little chat about her new best friend. Starting here, and continuing through the series finale, the scenes between Kate and Yelena prove to be some of the best of the series (although we don't get nearly as much interaction between Yelena and Clint as I expected).

Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy #1

The times are different, but the setting remains the same. Star Wars: Halcyon Legacy #1 introduces us to the luxury cruise ship Halcyon which has a habit of inviting trouble over the years.

Stargirl - The Complete Second Season

The Second Season of Stargirl finds Courtney (Brec Bassinger) forced to attend summer school and deal with the arrival of Eclipso in Blue Valley. It will be a tumultuous season for the new JSA as Eclipso targets various members of the team forcing Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) to quit her role as Wildcat and Rick (Cameron Gellman) to end up in prison after loosing his temper.

The season offers a number of flashbacks to the original team, including (in the season's stand-out episode) the big reveal of how the JSA were able to defeat Eclipso and the consequences from the encounter which was the beginning of the end for the group. We also see the fallout of season one on several characters and the struggle for Mike (Trae Romano) to find a role within the group.

Single Drunk Female - One Day at a Time

Nine days into her sobriety, Sam's (Sofia Black-D’Elia) struggles continue with a run-in with her ex, bills for the damage she caused to the party bus, and a fight with her mother (Ally Sheedy). Some unexpected calm and context is found with a discussion with her mother's new boyfriend Bob (Ian Gomez) who turns out to be more than the tool Sam was expecting and is actually making her mother happy. Gomez turns out to be a nice addition to the cast as Bob changes Sam's view of her mother, that and some time with James (Garrick Bernard) help get Sam through another tough day while finally starting to live life one day at a time.

Detective Comics #1051

Part of the ongoing "Shadow of the Bat" arc, the Bat-Family (sans Batman) is trying to get a new drug off the streets of Gotham, the supplier of which is Arkham Tower's Dr. Tobias Wear. He has been selling both real and fake shipments of drugs to criminals all over town who are none to happy. He's also got Mayor Nakano on his back in terms of the city signing off on his form of treatment. Which is why he's brought in Psycho Pirate to help control the situation. Turns out putting all your hopes on a emotionally-unstable psychotic in a jester's costume isn't necessarily the best plan.

Reacher - First Dance

Choosing to remain in Margrave to get answers, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) arranges a trap for the prison guard that put Reacher and Hubble (Marc Bendavid) into general population to get them killed during their short stint in prison. The meet turns out to be a trap on both sides as Reacher is jumped by two Columbians. Everyone leaves with some bruises and scratches but no more answers as to what is going on. After the Chief of Police (Peter Skagen) gets nailed to a wall and has his balls cut off (a familiar threat that was made to Hubble), the Mayor (Bruce McGill) makes himself the acting chief, hoping to control the investigation. However, this alerts our protagonist that there is something far larger going on in Margrave, which likely led to his brother's death.

The Power of the Dog

Sometimes a movie just doesn't work for you. I didn't hate director Jane Champion's The Power of the Dog but I'll admit to being underwhelmed by the critical darling so many are quick to praise. Yes, it has a strong performance by Benedict Cumberbatch and some lovely scenery but it's also saddled with a predictable plot and a host of single-note characters whom I never became invested in.  In fact, on my first viewing, the film literally put me to sleep.

Our leads are Benedict Cumberbatch as rough-and-tumble rancher Phil Burbank (the mean one), Jesse Plemons as his more genteel brother George (the bland one), Kirsten Dunst as inn owner and George's new wife Rose (the female one), and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Rose's nearly full-grown son Peter (the creepy one). The plot mainly involves Phil acting horribly to everyone and the eventual fallout of that behavior. The payoff of which, for me, wasn't worth the time spent to get there.

The Mysterious Benedict Society - Depends on the Wagon

While Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale) struggles with the news that his estranged twin brother is Dr. Curtain, the man in control of L.I.V.E. Institute and the Emergency, the student-spies attempt to do well in their classes to earn "Messenger" status and access to the tower. With Constance (Marta Kessler) and Kate (Emmy DeOliveira) struggling to do well, and in danger of being deported, Benedict suggests the group do whatever it takes to remain in the institute, even cheat raising some among the group to wonder if they are indeed working for the right brother.

Once & Future #24

The runaway story continues to evolve as Arthur battles Arthur on the hills of Badon, which is saved by Zombie Arthur's Merlin learning a trick or two from our heroes on how to turn a king against his favorite knight. And yet another Arthur appears to enter the fray. Any chance this one's not as crazy and warmongering as the other two? Well, not if the pattern holds.

The Book of Boba Fett - The Streets of Mos Espa

More of "Chapter 3" takes place in the present as the Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan (Carey Jones) is sent to kill Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) by the Hutt Twins, Fett increases his small band by taking on some cybernetic youths who have been causing trouble in the city, and a new threat to the former bounty hunter arrives. The Wookiee's failure leads to the rather quick exit of the Hutts, which is somewhat surprising. The introduction of the less-interesting Pyke Syndicate as the new threat to Fett ties into the flashback sequences as well providing us with the circumstances that caused the bounty hunter to leave his life with the Tusken Raiders.

The Human Target #4

Christopher Chance's investigation into which member of the Justice League International may have murdered him continues as he spends the day with Blue Beetle and Ice. Most of the day is spent watching the two heroes team-up to stop a number of threats across the country, and with each one Chance finds himself falling more for Tora.

Hawkeye - Partners, Am I Right?

Although Clint (Jeremy Renner) will push her away again by the end of the episode, "Partners, Am I Right?" focuses mainly on the unexpected partnership between Hawkeye and Kate (Hailee Steinfeld). There are a lot of little pieces her involving looking into Kate's crooked stepfather-to-be and his connection to the Tracksuit Mafia, the return of the LARPers, another run-in with Echo (Alaqua Cox), Kate guessing the truth of Ronin, and trap involving another item stolen from the Avengers which leads to the introduction of Yelena (Florence Pugh), which was teased at the end of Black Widow.

Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #1

Recollecting the classic Usagi Yojimbo stories from the character's first series, Miyamoto Usagi is hired by Lady Koriko in Usagi Yojimbo: Lone Goat and Kid #1 to return her recently deceased husband's swords home from the village in which he died. Things get more complicated when Usagi discovers the samurai was murdered and his mistress, who loved him far more than his wife, has no interest in parting with the swords.

How I Met Your Father - FOMO

The spin-off brings the characters back together in a cliched romcom misunderstanding as Valentina (Francia Raisa) tries to set up her boyfriend with the guys the met in the "Pilot" episode to widen his social circle, leading to Jesse (Christopher Lowell) and Sid (Suraj Sharma) mistakenly believing it's a setup for Jesse and Sophie (Hilary Duff). There's not much of interest here in the swanky New York night club that looks like a cheap set, with Sophie and Jesse eventually agreeing to be friends while teasing the idea that they may possibly be a match for each other (i.e. Ted and Robin) when the time is right. Despite the subpar writing, Duff is doing her best to keep the show afloat, but she's going to need help if this show is going to have any chance to become more than a trivia question.

Seven Secrets #13

Caspar, Eva, and the other manage to survive the destruction of the Seekers' headquarters, although it does lead to Caspar making a startling discovery about himself and an eventual confrontation between mother and son over her actions and what Eva is keeping from him. And, as we've seen before, we get another reference to Caspar's impending death.

Naomi - Zero to Sixty

While searching for answers about herself and her connection to the mysterious disc, Naomi McDuffie (Kaci Walfall) gets stuck in a bit of cliched teenager loop getting herself into trouble and not coming clean to her parents about the reasons why. As for her parents, despite initially seeming to have no conception of their adopted daughter's origins, "Zero to Sixty" seems to quickly reverse course for the series (even if the big reveal is far less impressive or emotional that what we got in the original comic).
