After crushing Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) and Rick (Cameron Gellman), but failing with Beth (Anjelika Washington), Eclipso turns his attention on Courtney's (Brec Bassinger) family by targeting Barbara (Amy Smart) and Mike (Trae Romano) for their guilt over Icicle's (Neil Jackson) death while Pat (Luke Wilson) gets lost in memories of the old days involving Eclipso's previous appearance decades before and the dark days following the death of Charles McNider's daughter. Set against a raging storm in the background, Barbara is able to find some light from an unlikely source while Courtney arrives just in time to save both Mike and Pat from their nightmares.
"Chapter Nine" is a stand-out episode for the show's Second Season. The flashbacks not only confirm the how the JSA was able to defeat Eclipso, and the toll it took on the team, but also allows for the show's first appearance of John Wesley Shipp confirming the Flash was a member of the JSA while also making references to Doctor Fate and the Spectre as members. Eclipso's nightmare visions also allow for the return of a vengeful Icicle (if only in Barbara's mind) while also showing us what an evil version of his son might look like. In the end, it's the secret Pat and Barbara chose to keep from Courtney that causes the real damage to the family leaving an amused Eclipso pleased with his handiwork.
