Legends of Tomorrow - Aruba-Con
After breaking all of time, the Legends find themselves replaced from their roles as time police by Rip Hunter's (Arthur Darvill) new Time Bureau. Struggling to fit back into everyday lives, the group is given the chance to jump back into action when Mick (Dominic Purcell) discovers Julius Caesar (Simon Merrells) on a beach in Aruba. While the Legends first attempt to right history, after stealing the Waverider from the Time Bureau, goes horribly wrong, eventually the group does prove their value and grudgingly earn their roles back in helping clean up the mess they caused.
There is some disappointment with the arrival of Hunter and his new team at the beginning of the episode. Last season ended with time being broken to visually-stunning effect, and the former Time Master stepping in and cleaning up the entire mess in a matter of seconds does deflate my interest a bit in Season Three. There's plenty of animosity between the Legends and Time Bureau, which I'd expect to see continue through the season, but Hunter must admit that even if they screw-up things worse at first (something the wiser members of the team are willing to own up to), the Legends eventually do get the job done and may be needed for a larger threat looming in the future.
However, there are a few issues here, most of which take place during the Legends downtime prior to stealing the timeship (something exceedingly easy, by the way). While I can understand Sara (Caity Lotz) being a bit lost in a world where she is believed dead (again), there's no real reason for Ray (Brandon Routh) to be a struggling developer. Are you honestly telling me no one, including Star Labs, would be interested in hiring one of the smartest scientists on the planet? Or that it would be impossible for him to get funding for his own research which would be worth billions to the right backer? As for Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), the show definitely misses her involvement. The ending scene suggests she has her hands full with her own life making me wonder if the show might finally begin to borrow characters from other times to help flesh out their team. I know of one such hero who would make a great addition to this rag-tag crew.
