The discovery of a body in a storage locker sends Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) down the rabbit hole on a dizzying case involving sunken pirate treasury, theft, murder, and fraud, with no scarcity of suspects. While the true motivation for the killing alludes them, eventually the pair will discover the truth about the pirate gold, and their murder victim.
While the case of the week takes several turns, the case that Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) murdered his former best friend years ago seems to be all but a certainty. Given his important role as a confidential informant, the police have no interest in persuing the case. However, Sherlock's own recent actions keeping the man out of prison force him to push further, and Shinwell pushes back. Hard. The season-long thread takes a dark turn with Shinwell's attack on Sherlock raising questions to what the detective will do next in retaliation.
