The relief Eleanor (Kristen Bell) feels at discovering she isn't the only one mistakenly let into heaven is short lived as she discovers Jianyu (Manny Jacinto) isn't so much a wise Buddhist monk but a failed idiot DJ from Jacksonville, Florida, named Jason Mendoza. Tired of living a lie, something we see Jason did plenty of in his old life, Jianyu nearly comes clean to the entire community forcing Eleanor to take drastic action to prevent the truth from coming out and getting both herself and Jianyu sent to Hell.
With all the flashbacks focused on his life, "Jason Mendoza" spends quite a bit of time showcasing just how big of mistake it was to let the man into The Good Place. Tahani (Jameela Jamil) is given her own subplot by helping Michael (Ted Danson) make one of her neighbor's dreams come true - which of course Eleanor's actions destroy (both literally and figuratively as the evening is ruined when a giant sinkhole breaks open in the middle of the newly-opened restaurant). With Tahani believing Eleanor and Chidi (William Jackson Harper) are helping Jianyu overcome his shyness, the episode also creates a reason for Chidi's ethics lessons which gain a new student. A really, really stupid new student.
