Green Lanterns #9

Teased in the previous issue, Green Lanterns #9 kicks off a new arc centered around the "Phantom Ring" (a power ring anyone can use). Set entirely from the perspective of Frank Lamninski we get a feel for the jealousy and obsession a normal person can be corrupted by in a world full of super-heroes. While not quite on the the same level in terms of storytelling, this issue reminded me of Astro City and its focus of showing a world of heroes through the eyes of others.

Ever since the first appearance of Green Lantern, Frank Lamninski has been obsessed with power rings. Seeing more and more humans chosen over the years has only increased his drive to become worthy enough to earn his own ring. Green Lanterns #9 highlights that drive and obsession and the moment when all his work was ultimately dashed.

I still have some doubts about the Phantom Ring storyline overall, but basing much of the story on Lamninski and his obsession does make me more curious to see where this tale will go. Even if it's mostly background and set-up for the story about to unfold, it's still worth a look.
