I do enjoy Kono (Grace Park) episodes. While "Mo'o 'olelo Pu" does offer a case of the week involving a recently paroled meth maker getting back into the business which sent him to prison the main focus of the latest episode is Kono getting lost at sea while attempting to sail around the Hawaiian islands before her wedding day. Along with Kono stuggling to survive her ordeal at sea the episode also offers several flashbacks to her childhood, her relationship with her mother (Catherine Haena Kim), and Kono's love of the ocean. It's an unusual episode for the series but one that gives us greater insight to a character not named McGarrett (a definite rarity) and offers the chance for Park to shine.
Given that the show still hasn't been officially renewed for a Sixth Season and Park's recent pregnancy the fate of her character is more in doubt than previous times the show has used similar gambits with one of their stars. I enjoyed Kim as Kono's mother, although her old age make-up in the present day was certainly one of the weaker aspects of this week's show. The case of the week has a harsh twist involving the reasoning for the ex-con getting back in the meth business but is quickly dispensed with allowing Kono to steal most of the spotlight this week and to make it home safely in time for next week's double-sized season finale.
