"The Fortification Implementation" is a rare episode of The Big Bang Theory where we are offered three separate stories which all work independently of each other. My favorite of the three brings back Wil Wheaton playing himself, and Penny's (Kaley Cuoco) former co-star on Serial Ape-ist 2: Monkey See, Monkey Kill, for a podcast in Penny's apartment with Penny and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and special guest-caller Kevin Smith (also playing himself and never shown on-screen). Bringing up the old fights about Penny's failed acting career the scenes also feature some fun back-and-fourth between the four characters with several jokes at Kevin Smith's expense (who's not even in the room to defend himself).
The second of the three stories involves Amy's (Mayim Bialik) attempts to cheer up her boyfriend after Sheldon (Jim Parsons) discovers he isn't invited to a prestigious local scientist retreat. The mopey date night takes an interesting turn when the pair decide to build a fort in the middle of the living room which, despite its childish themes, brings the couple closer together. The third storyline introduces Howard (Simon Helberg) to his half-brother Josh (Matt Bennett) who he never knew existed. The weakest of the three stories, this plot thread continues to deal with the loss of Howard's mother while opening the door to a new recurring character and potentially an appearance by Howard's estranged father.
