Sleepy Hollow - Paradise Lost

The Second Season of Sleepy Hollow returns from its mid-season break with its characters a bit lost. Taking place six weeks after the defeat of Moloch and the death of their son (John Noble), Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Katrina (Katia Winter) are far from reunited as a happy couple. Choosing to spend time apart, Ichabod has become obsessed with finding new evil to battle as his wife searches for a way to free Abraham (Neil Jackson) from the Horseman of Death. "Pardise Lost" forces both stories to converge as the arrival of a bloodthirsty angel (Max Brown) which will lead to conflicted loyalties and the revelation of an entirely new threat to the town.

Dispensing with the show's boogeyman a the midway point of last season was an odd choice and the ramifications can be felt in the mid-season premiere with most of the characters going through the motions for the first-half of the episode. The reveal of a hole in Purgatory allowing Orion and others trapped in the dimension to enter their world allows for the show to get back to the basics of a monster-of-the-week, albeit this time without a big bad behind their collected attacks. It also allows for the unexpected return of Irving (Orlando Jones).

Quizzically, despite heavily teasing a romance between Abbie (Nicole Beharie) and Nick (Matt Barr) it's the other Mills sister (Lyndie Greenwood) the scoundrel declares his feelings for. Although we're told that six weeks have past since Moloch's defeat, Crane and Katrina are no closer and no farther apart than we saw them last season. You get the feeling that the show's writers are going to keep the pair straddling the fence about their marriage for as long as possible (even if it is already getting old).
