Barred from officially working with the NYPD any longer, Castle (Nathan Fillion) surprises Beckett (Stana Katic) by showing up at her crime scene with his newly acquired private investigator's license. Unable to work the case of the murdered private school educator together, the pair each follow their own leads only to have Castle continually beating Beckett, Esposito (Jon Huertas), and Ryan (Seamus Dever) on uncovering what the woman was up to in the days before her death and how her murder ties back to 15 year-old death on a college campus.
It will be interesting to see how long Castle keeps up the current arrangement. Putting a somewhat ill-prepared Castle one his own leads to the P.I. getting maced by a dog sitter and sitting down unknowingly with a murderer. The concept gives the show an entirely new avenue to get the writer into trouble, quite possibly life-threatening danger. It also provides some laughs by filling Castle's NYPD pals with dread about being scooped by the P.I. despite his limited resources.
Given Gates' (Penny Johnson) strict orders barring Beckett's husband from working any case with them the two have to dance around quite a bit before filling in the gaps for each other by admitting what they've learned. Will Castle continue worming his way into Beckett's cases? Or will coincidence allow the pair's paths to continually cross professionally? Also, given her interest in her father's new choice of profession, could the P.I. game become a family affair with Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) getting involved in a case? And will the frustration of working apart force a big change in the show with Castle being reinstated as a consultant for the NYPD or the department's brightest detective choosing to leave the precinct to work alongside her husband? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
