And then there was that time the Turtles went LARPing. Fascinated with roleplaying game they discovered in the trash, the Turtles decide to dress up as their characters and continue their roleplaying adventure in the sewers. After being exposed to a mysterious mist Leonardo (Jason Biggs), Raphael (Sean Astin), Donatello (Rob Paulsen), and Michelangelo (Greg Cipes) find themselves trapped in a very real dungeon filled with traps, monkey goblins, a dragon, and Sir Malachi "the sparrow wizard" (Paul Reubens) who has captured "princess" April (Mae Whitman) and taken over the Leonardo's adventure to create a new quest for the Turtles.
Despite Raphael having head morphed into that of a turkey, The Turtles eventually find April trapped in a giant snow globe. To defeat the fire-breathing Leatherhead and Malachi they'll have to first believe in the magic of the illusion and then see past it to the real world thus breaking the sparrow's mind-controlled reality.
Dungeons & Dragons fans should get a particular kick out of this episode, first with the Turtles gathered around the table and later in the increasingly odd LARP adventure. I particularly liked the Gandalf-inspired costume of Donnie and Leonardo's helmet that reminded me an awful lot of Galactus. Malachi is one the show's more interesting original characters, completely separate from both The Foot and the Kraang, and I'm hoping the Turtles, who obviously enjoyed their adventure, may seek out the sparrow wizard for another quest somewhere down the line.
