Taking place in 2010, the latest episode of Person of Interest features Reese (Jim Caviezel) still working along side of Kara Stanton (Annie Parisse) for the CIA who has ordered the pair to eliminate a traitor. The truth, however, is a bit more interesting. Their target is computer programmer Daniel Casey (Joseph Mazzello) who was hired by Control (Camryn Manheim) and her subordinate (Jay O. Sanders) to break into a Top Secret computer system in the Pacific Northwest.
Well before Finch ever reached out to Mr. Reese, Harold relies on a mercenary named Dillinger (Neil Jackson) to keep the programmer safe while trying to shield his operative from any truth about where the mysterious numbers come from or why the government wants the latest target dead. Sadly, Finch's first partner proves to be far less reliable than Reese as Dillinger leaves the number on his own while drugging Harold and attempting to make a big score by selling the laptop to the Chinese on the black market (where Reese and and Stanton would find it on their final mission for the CIA).
Setting the episode back in 2010 gives the show the opportunity to return several characters (and give us a glimpse of Reese doubts about his job before the the trip to China) while introducing Daniel Casey who apparently has become of interest to The Machine again. The episode comes to a close with the return of Root (Amy Acker), still working on her own secret mission for The Machine, who reaches out to the programmer and taps him for an important mission of his own. The episode is puposefully vague as to what that entails, but if it means we'll be seeing more of Acker again then I'm completely on board.
