Heading into next week's (long overdue) two-part series finale, "The End of the Aisle" deals with Robin's (Cobie Smulders) last-minute wedding jitters which are only enhanced when Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) delivers Robin her long-lost locket which she immediately realizes Ted (Josh Radnor) must have found. It takes both Ted, ignoring the words he has longed to hear from his former love, and later the woman (Cristin Milioti) who he will eventually marry and Barney himself to stop Robin from becoming a runaway bride and find the the only reason she needs to stay and to marry the man she loves.
Although the wedding itself is only presented in a single montage, the show has put in the time over the years to make the day pay-off for the odd couple that definitely belong together clearing the path to deal with Ted's love life in the two-part finale. The episode's B-story features Barney struggling with his wedding vows and calling out Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) for breaking every vow they made to each other on their wedding day. Unintentionally Barney leads the best couple he's ever known to make new vows to each other and give Barney the courage to tell Robin the only vow she really wants to hear.
Although I enjoy these characters and will be sad to see their adventures end, I've watched less-and-less over the past couple of years and am only coming back to the final season now to see how the show decides to say farewell to the Ted and friends while finally delivering on the promise the voice of Older Ted (Bob Saget) has been teasing for nine years - the story of how he met his kids' mother.
