Continuum's Second Season continues the adventures Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), a time-displaced cop from the future trapped in the present to find a stop a group of rebels from 2077 who plan on changing history. Highlights from the season include Keira reconnecting with an older version of her partner from the future (Karin Konoval), Keira finding her cyber-systems temporarily shutdown by a CMR psychological program (Alessandro Juliani) to determine her psychological fitness, the reveal of the the mysterious Mr. Escher (Hugh Dillon), the trial of Julian Randol (Richard Harmon), and Kiera being arrested for Agent Gardiner's (Nicholas Lea) murder.
Ongoing stories involve both Kiera and Alec (Erik Knudsen) questioning why Kiera and Liber8 were sent into the past, Alec's relationship with Emily (Magda Apanowicz), the rise of Theseus, and the splintering of Liber8 into separate factions led by Travis (Roger R. Cross) and Sonya (Lexa Doig).
A sci-fi show that's fueled by as much by ideas as a limited sci-fi effects budget, Continuum has its moments (particularly when it begins playing with the idea of who the the good guys in the future really are - the government controlled by Alec's technology or the terrorists he allowed to return to the past to change his future?). High on promise, sometimes the execution leaves a bit to be desired.
Although the first couple episodes concerned with dealing with the fallout from the First Season finale and a dangerous new street drug from the future are a little weak, the rest of the season holds up pretty well as Kiera's attempts to stop Liber8 are complicated by Escher, Alec's new relationships with Emily and Kellog (Stephen Lobo), and the Freelancers targeting time travelers both living and dead.
The three-disc set includes a behind-the-scenes feature on the making of the show's Second Season and commentary for most of the episodes by cast and crew including Nichols, Victor Webster, Jennifer Spence, Brian Markinson, Omari Newton, Luvia Petersen, creator Simon Barry, directors Pat Williams and Mike Rohl, stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith, writer Shelley Eriksen, and others.
