Lock, Stock, Some Smoking Barrels and Burton Guster's Goblet of Fire

Psych opens its final season with a trip to England for Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) and the return of Cary Elwes as one of the show's most entertaining recurring characters: international jewel and art thief Pierre Despereaux. However, he is no longer Despereaux. It turns out the entire art thief existence was nothing more than a deep undercover role by a well-respected Interpol agent (a story Gus doesn't buy for a second) who now needs Shawn's help due to the psychic detective's strong resemblance to a getaway driver Interpol needs to take down London crime boss Ronnie Ives (Vinnie Jones).

Only heading overseas with Shawn to attend a Harry Potter fan convention, Gus gets dragged in on Shawn's mission as the team's new demolition expert when Ives decides to kill the last one. And, after finding a hole in Desperaux's story about working for Interpol, the pair stay on the case but alert Agent Winston (Theo Devaney) of the thief's true identity and probable motives. However, the truth behind the heist (which isn't actually a heist) and Desperaux's true motives are far more complicated than either Shawn or Gus first realize.

Despereaux's return is always cause for celebration, and the Eighth Season premiere finds a way to make the man who has repeatedly lied and tricked both Shawn and Gus both more and less trustworthy in the same episode. Although I wasn't a big fan of the opening narration (which lasts far too long), the ridiculous titled "Lock, Stock, Some Smoking Barrels and Burton Guster's Goblet of Fire" is one of the Psych's best season openers allowing multiple instances of the show's trademark insanity and goofy humor. That plus a mystery with some efficient twists and turns makes for a memorable premiere. If the rest of the season is anywhere near as strong then this last season should be a good one.
