In a rescue attempt that frees Finch (Michael Emerson), Shaw (Sarah Shahi), and Arthur (Saul Rubinek) from Control's (Camryn Manheim) clutches, Root (Amy Acker) ends up taking their place and is slowly tortured for information about her access to The Machine. Jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire, Shaw and Finch head to retrieve Samartian's hard drives from a safety deposit box only to be ambushed by both Vigilance and Hersh's (Boris McGiver) men. With Arthur and Finch trapped in the vault, Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Fusco (Kevin Chapman) stuck in a jail in Colorado, Vigilance's armed band in control of the bank, and Hersh's men surrounding the building, Shaw has to find a way to get her team out alive (by blowing shit up).
Inside the vault Harold has a heart-to-heart with his old friend about the wonders of Arthur's machine that never quite was, and Finch's machine that he describes as both wonderful and terrible. Convincing Arthur to destroy Samaritan rather than let it be enslaved by those who would use it for terrible purposes, the second Machine never makes it out of the bank vault alive (or at least that's what they initially believe). Thanks to Shaw's plan, however, the two computer geniuses and the hammer with finesse coming out of her ass are able to escape (with a little help from a pair of old friends).
Forced to sacrifice an ear to during her torture, Root eventually turns the tables on Control before disappearing once more in the mist (which sadly means we might be seeing far less of Ms. Acker in the coming weeks). And despite returning with Lionel to save Finch's life, Reese has no plans on returning to work for The Machine who he still blames for Carter's (Taraji P. Henson) death. However, from the preview for next week's episode he may find it harder to quit than he initially believes. And with the Samaritan drives now in the hands of the enemy, Finch will need all the help he can get for whatever comes next.
