The Big Bang Theory - The Hofstadter Insufficiency

In the show's Seventh Season premiere Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) bond while Leonard (Johnny Galecki) parties in the North Sea on his science excursion, Howard (Simon Helberg) attempts to shake Raj (Kunal Nayyar) out of his funk caused by loosing his girlfriend (Kate Micucci) by taking his best friend to a faculty mixer, and Amy(Mayim Bialik) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) room together during a science convention out of town. The result is a rather lackluster opener to the season, with a few fun moments, that provides three separate stories, only one of which has much to offer.

Of the three stories Penny and Sheldon works the best as Sheldon, refusing to admit how much he misses his roommate, latches on to Penny for companionship. Although their frank discussion doesn't share much about the scientist it does give us a little more information about Penny's first real acting role in a cheap horror flick (which we get to a scene of during the end credit sequence).

Neither of the other two plotlines provide much of note. Raj offends and then apologizes to Mrs. Davis (Janine Davis), and Amy and Bernadette enjoy getting hit on (which is amusing) before get into a fight over how they see each other's significant others (which isn't). Leonard's ridiculous party lifestyle on the high seas is fun (if tremendously unsubtle) and also far from Sheldon's nightmare version which opens the episode. The line about the Kracken was a nice touch (even if the creature we see references the awful remake of Clash of the Titans rather than the original). That and Penny finding another excuse to hug Sheldon are the episode's best moments.
