Pretty Little Liars' shocking summer finale begins with the Liars receiving gifts from A who threatens retaliation when Travis' (Luke Kleintank) eye-witness account forces the District Attorney to drop all charges against Hanna’s mother (Laura Leighton) and ends with one doozy of a reveal that should keep fans talking for months until the show's return on October 22nd. With the police now actively searching for Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray) as their new number one suspect in Wilden's murder, A declares Mona (Janel Parrish) to be her next target.
In the calm before the storm each of the Liars spends the night with the ones they love as Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby (Keegan Allen) make up, Paige's (Lindsey Shaw) is able to calm Emily's (Shay Mitchell) nerves, Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) stakeout the missing Mona's home, and, after a fizzled date with Jake (Ryan Guzman), Aria (Lucy Hale) spends a much more stimulating evening with Ezra (Ian Harding) at the coffee house. The next day the latest gift from A sends all four to a magic performance in the creepy town of Ravenswood where their nemesis uses magic to make one of the Liars literally disappear.
In saving Emily from being sawed in half (and not in an amusing cheesy magic way), the Liars confront two separate versions of Red Coat one of whom leads them to A's lair of secrets and the other who doesn't make it out of the death trap alive... or does she? As to the discovery of the identity of the helpful version of Red Coat, Carla Grunwald (Meg Foster) helps fill in those answers by walking the Liars through the events of the night where Alison (Sasha Pieterse) "died." Given this new information, and the items found it the lair, all evidence in the summer finale certainly seems to point Alison DiLaurentis being alive and A being a "he" rather than a "she" (and certainly not Alison).
The cliffhanger leaves several questions up in the air as to what Mona and Shana (AeriƩl Miranda) were doing in secret together, how much of Grunwald's story is to be believed, what happened to Cece Drake, and, in the season's biggest twist yet, just what Ezra was doing in Ravenswood inside A's hidden lair? Is Aria's soul mate part of the A-Team... or even A himself, or is this yet another red herring to keep the real A hidden in the shadows for a little while longer? We'll have to wait until October for the possible answers to those questions as the show returns in time for Halloween and to launch its new spin-off Ravenswood.
