As everyone reels with news of Mona (Janel Parrish)confessing to the murder of Detective Wilden (Bryce Johnson), Paige (Lindsey Shaw) decides to throw Emily(Shay Mitchell) a surprise birthday party. However the birthday girl isn't in a partying mood after a professional swimming coach (Kamar de los Reyes) confirms her worst fears that even if her injury heals there's no chance for her to get back into shape soon enough to earn a swimming scholarship for next year.
Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Aria (Lucy Hale) have secondary motives at the party by trying to separate Jenna (Tammin Sursok) from Shana (Aeriél Miranda) long enough to grill Jenna about what secrets she's still keeping about Alison (Sasha Pieterse) and discover who she's so afraid of, but once again a Rosewood party ends in tragedy as the nearly blind Jenna nearly drowns in the lake while trying to dodge questions from the Liars. Emily isn't alone in suspecting that someone may have helped her into the pond.
As the rest of her friends deal with the drama of the party, Hanna (Ashley Benson) spends the night with her mother‘s (Laura Leighton) who was finally awarded bail based on Mona's confession. Although Hanna believes her father to be responsible for putting up the $100,000 bail money she later discovers Ted (Edward Kerr) was the one who stepped up when she needed it most. Other plotlines involve Aria finally giving her obvious feelings for Jake (Ryan Guzman), Mona (whose true motives still have yet to be revealed) returning to Radley, the foreshadowing of A's new game for Toby (Keegan Allen), and Ezra (Ian Harding) deciding to fight back when Maggie (Larisa Oleynik) drops the bombshell that she plans to take his son and relocate to Seattle.
Although they are still together as the episode comes to a close, "Into the Deep" sets the stage early for the end of Emily and Paige's relationship. Given the results of other parties the Liars have thrown or attended one might think people might stay away, but the near tragedy does force Shana to reveal that Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray) is the one Jenna fears. As to why that's the case, and just what kind of home improvements A has been up to in the end credit sequences of the last two episodes, we'll just have to wait and see.
