Continuum - Second Degree

While the Julian Randol (Richard Harmon) trial turns into a three-ring circus which both Sonya (Lexa Doig) and Travis (Roger R. Cross) are manipulating from the shadows, Kiera (Rachel Nichols) enlists the help of Agent Gardiner (Nicholas Lea) to track down who stole the remains of her old partner (Karin Konoval) from her grave along with the bodies of two members of Liber8 from the police morgue. When Alec's mother (Janet Kidder) perjures herself to try and protect Julian, Alec must decide whether to lie to protect his mother and help a murderer go free or tell the truth and risk being the cause of his mother being sent to jail.

When Kiera and Carlos (Victor Webster) discover Liber8 has kidnapped the family members of one of the jurors in an attempt to ensure Julian's freedom, the pair scour blueprints and records for the hold of the boat that the two women are being kept in against their will. Despite Kiera and Carlos freeing the family, the judge (Dean Paul Gibson) has no choice but to dismiss the tampered jury and pronounce sentence himself. His verdict shocks the courtroom but not the audience.

At the beginning and end of "Second Degree," the episode shifts back and forth between the current and future sentencing of Julian. In both cases the man finds a way to finagle his way out of both convictions (although in the future his stayed sentence doesn't sit nearly as well with the renown terrorist). The episode also reveals Emily (Magda Apanowicz), who has an impressive set of skills in disarming and killing would-be assassins looking for Alec, is working the mysterious Mr. Escher (Hugh Dillon). The episode ends with Kiera and Gardiner following up on his investigation into the missing bodies and Julian sentenced to only serve out the remaining two-weeks of his incarceration as Sonya, Travis, and Martin (Tahmoh Penikett) all get what they wanted.
