The show's soapy First Season comes to a close with Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) reeling from the shooting of Dante (Jay Hernandez) and Jolene's (Sylvia Jefferies) suicide, Gunnar (Sam Palladio) faced with the decision of choosing a career based on a the songs of his brother or fixing his broken relationship with Scarlett (Clare Bowen) who has been spending more and more time with Avery (Jonathan Jackson) both on-stage and off, the U.S. Attorney closing in on Teddy (Eric Close), Maddie (Lennon Stella) and Deacon (Charles Esten) learning the truth that Rayna (Connie Britton) has kept from both of them for 13 years, and the arrival of the CMA Awards.
After Rayna performs her new single with Brad Paisley, Deacon confronts Rayna about the news that Maddie is his daughter, and the answer leads the musician to the nearest bar and throw away his 13 years of sobriety. Rayna races home to Maddie and Teddy to try and defuse the situation while sending Coleman (Robert Wisdom) in search of the man she loves. It takes Coleman, Scarlett, and Gunnar together to talk some sense into the still quite angry and drunk Deacon the next day, but despite his promises to Coleman, Deacon has no intention of getting sober again.
Juliete wins Female Artist and the CMAs but doesn't find peace until after the funeral when she receives a letter her mother left before her death explaining her actions and perform the following night at the Bluebird with Avery in honor of Jolene. Scarlett gets a surprise as well and Gunnar makes a grand romantic gesture to win her back with an unexpected proposal. The season doesn't end as well for Rayna and Deacon whose drunk actions lead Rayna to flip his truck with both inside. We'll have to wait until next Fall to find out the full extent of Deacon's actions. I'm hoping we may get a little more behind-the-scenes of country music and less over-the-top soap opera dramatics when the show returns for its Second Season, but I won't hold my breath.
