As the show opens Aria (Lucy Hale) is less than receptive to her father's (Chad Lowe) apology at accusing his daughter and her friends of the attack on Meredith (Amanda Schull) and begins questioning her mother (Holly Marie Combs) about her father's whereabouts the night Alison (Sasha Pieterse) was killed. Returning to the high school to recover Alison's journal, Hanna (Ashley Benson), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), and Emily (Shay Mitchell) discover “A” has beaten them to it.
Hanna deduces Lucas (Brendan Robinson) is the hooded figure they run into in the basement that night as well as the person who started the fire as a warning to Mona (Janel Parrish) not to start up her schemes again. When she confronts Lucas he admits to Hanna that Mona has been blackmailing him for months to do errands for A and has decided his only option is to leave Rosewood High.
Emily convinces Paige (Lindsey Shaw) to break curfew and go to a swim team party, but their night out doesn't go according to plan thanks to Paige's anxiety following recent events which isn't improved by her tire getting slashed and Emily chasing the person (Keegan Allen) responsible into the woods. Spencer's night is equally wrecked when Mona not only joins her decathlon team but, just as unexpectedly, beats her out for team captain.
As the episode ends enemies become unlikely allies as Aria and Meredith share notes about her father's relationship with Alison and the night her best friend died. Hanna confronts Mona about Lucas and washes her hands of her former friend. We also see Mona following Aria's father around and reporting back to another A as the anonymous mastermind prepares his, or her, next move.
