An attempt by a not so bright thief to carjack McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and Catherine (Michelle Borth) leads the head of Five-0 to a case involving a young vandal named Ethan (Tristan Lake Leabu) so desperate for the police to help his father (Andrew Elvis Miller), who has gone missing on Christmas Eve, that the young man threw a rock through the front window of police headquarters.
After finding blood in the missing man's convenience store, a dead John Doe, and a suitcase full of money, the Five-0 Task Force has more questions than answers. When Max (Masi Oka) is able to link their dead body to a bootlegging operation Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) calls on uncle (George Takei) who has personal experience making moonshine. But for real answers Catherine needs the help of Ethan, who runs off in search of his own answers when he learns the identity of the murder victim.
Kono (Grace Park) is able to trace the missing man's briefcase of cash to a five year-old Chicago bank robbery and the man (Lew Temple) behind it, who it turns out is the recluse buying moonshine and supplies from the convenience store before a group of local thugs got the bright idea to rob the man's compound. With Five-0 closing in the bank robbery takes the missing father home looking to retrieve as much cash as he paid the man before fleeing the islands which gives Catherine a chance to show off her ass-kicking skills and save the day.
The uncertainty of everyone's motives makes "Kahu" work pretty well. There are also a couple of fun moments worth noting including McGarrett (literally) sweeping Catherine off her feet in the episode's closing scene and Kamekona (Taylor Wily) calling in a favor from Danny (Scott Caan) by asking the cop to help him buy a helicopter from a disreputable seller(David Rees Snell) to help broaden his shrimp business' brand identity (even if he doesn't actually know how to fly a helicopter).
