As Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) starts cracking up in space back on Earth Amy (Mayim Bialik) is concerned when Sheldon (Jim Parsons) hires an attractive research assistant (Margo Harshman) to help him search through his childhood journals for the scientific discovery that will earn him the Nobel Prize.
Howard's video chats with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) get more and more bizarre as the engineer begins to go stir crazy when he learns he won't be coming home for at least another week. Amy drags Penny (Kaley Cuoco) to the lab to check out Sheldon's new assistant Alex for herself. However, after viewing Leonard's (Jim Parsons) ease with her, and Alex's obvious attraction for Leonard, it's Penny who leaves the lab feeling concerned for the state of her relationship.
"The Higgs Boson Observation" has fun introducing a new character to the group, especially at the expense of Raj (Kunal Nayyar) who despite sharing her interests and field of study is incapable of talking to her. Alex's introduction, and her attraction to Leonard, also gives Penny pause in her possible plans to break-up with her boyfriend. Given that Alex's story is left open-ended I'm guessing we'll be seeing more of Harshman this season.
