While investigating the murder of a local surfer Lisbon (Robin Tunney) runs into her old fiance (Matt Flanagan), who she hasn't seen in more than a decade, and his wife (Claire Rankin). While Jane (Simon Baker) works the town looking for leads and uncovers a search for a sunken treasure from an old sailor (Tim De Zarn) who Jane believes the victim may have begun to search for with the assistance of Lisbon's old flame.
Cho (Tim Kang) and Grace (Amanda Righetti) talk with the victim's landlord (Brendan McCarthy) and roommate (Max Van Ville) who saw a boat running silent around the time the victim was killed. Cho also has Summer (Samaire Armstrong) look into the victim's connection to a local drug dealer named Tookie (Keram Malicki-Sánchez) but is unprepared for the consequences when she gets beat up trying to do more than he asked, especially after she lies to him about why she got hurt.
Lisbon discovers the victim's partner wasn't her old flame but his wife, who was having an affair with the victim. It's Jane, however, who unmasks the real killer by making him believe the victim moved the loot before his death. Once the charade is played out CBI can track them back to the treasure and proof of the murder.
An entertaining but pretty by-the-numbers story for the show, even with the inclusion of Lisbon's ex. I would have liked to have seen a little more of Lisbon and her one-time fiance, and Jane shows a remarkable amount of restraint by not probing more into her past given this unique opportunity. It was good to see the buttoned-down Cho loose control not once but twice, during the episode and come to terms with who he's been sleeping with, even if it may mean the departure of Summer from the show.
