Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) take a trip to Los Angeles to visit the set of "Bone of Contention" (a movie based on Dr. Brennan's latest book). While not impressed by the changes made to the novel or the director's (Hal Ozsan) disdain for the actual science involved, things get interesting when Bones discovers that a prop cadaver is actually a murder victim.
Unwilling to let the movie get shutdown, and to help the frenzied producer (Rosalind Chao) keep bad publicity from killing the project, Bones convinces Booth to claim jurisdiction so the pair can solve the case together. Bones uses the real equipment on the sound stage, the assistance of the film's science expert (Scott Lowell) and one of the actors (John Ducey) who turns out to have degrees in microbiology and botany, and the help of Cam (Tamara Taylor), Angela (Michaela Conlin), and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) back in the lab, identify the victim as the head of the studio.
Suspects for the murder include the movie's producer, the man's assistant (Abhi Sinha) and several members of the cast and crew (Jordan Belfi, Michael Charles Roman, Ashley Jones) and ground crew (Amy Landers, Rene Rosado) who all have criminal records, motives, and shaky alibis. Working together, the real and fake Jeffersonian teams are able find the murderer and close the case.
While solving the crime Booth considers a job proposal from a former Fed (Chris Williams) now working at the studio and Hodgins and Angela make it their mission to track down a B-movie Cam appeared in years ago before she started medical school. Booth chooses Bones over a cushy new job at a Hollywood movie studio and the pair make it home in time to enjoy a very special screening of "Invasion of the Mother Suckers." After quite a few mediocre episodes after the return from the hiatus "The Suit on the Set" proves to be one of the best episodes of the season leading into next week's season finale.
