Disco hits McKinley High in Glee's latest theme episode (complete with a disco dance floor and white polyester suits). Concerned about the lack of direction of several of the New Directions students, and jumping on the cue of Disco from Blaine (Darren Criss) and advice from Sue (Jane Lynch), Mr. Shue (Matthew Morrison) tries to inspire Finn (Cory Monteith), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Santana (Naya Rivera) with the music of Saturday Night Fever.
While Rachel tries to compromise to help Finn find his own dream, and Sam (Chord Overstreet) tries to give Mercedes the courage to follow her own own, Brittany's attempt to help Santana's dream of fame "by any means necessary" come true by releasing a sex tape of the two them online doesn't go exactly to plan. However, her back-up plan for Santana turns out to be just what she needs.
In an odd storyline that feels more than a little shoehorned in, Mercedes and Kurt (Chris Colfer) are approached by their biggest fan, an underclassman from Vocal Adrenaline looking for a little guidance as he considers performing in drag. Although the pair initially discourage him, Sue attempts to get them to reconsider believing it to be the perfect way to tank Vocal Adrenaline at Regionals. When Wade (Alex Newell) chooses to perform in full drag he close to making new head coach Jesse St. James' (Jonathan Groff) head explode, but he also pulls it off.
This week's songs include Blaine, Mike Chang and Brittany performing the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing," Will, Sue and Blaine perform the Bee Gees' "Night Fever," Mercedes, Santana and Brittany perform The Trammps' "Disco Inferno," Santana performs Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You," Rachel sings the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" to Finn, Vocal Adrenaline performs KC and the Sunshine Band's "Boogie Shoes," Finn sings the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman" to Rachel, and Finn, Mercedes, and Santana lead the New Directions in the show's finale of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive."
Like most of the theme episodes Glee has done, some of the numbers work better than others (just as some of the cast members are better fits for Disco). We're going to get another one next week with an episode centered around the music of Whitney Houston as the show moves closer to Regionals.
