Whitney Houston hits McKinley High as Will (Matthew Morrison) and Emma (Jayma Mays) plan their wedding and the graduating members of the New Directions mourn the recent death of the pop star and begin to realize that come graduation they will be saying goodbye to several of their friends as well.
The episode is punctuated by a strong scene between Kurt (Chris Colfer) and his father (Mike O'Malley) who, while ecstatic and proud at his son's bright future, is equally sad to see their time together under the same roof rapidly coming to an end. Joe (Samuel Larsen) tries to lift Quinn's (Dianna Agron) spirits as her physical therapy is going far slowly than she hoped. Feeling unsure about his growing romantic feelings for Quinn, Joe goes to Sam (Chord Overstreet) for advice.
Kurt, feeling a distance with Blaine (Darren Criss), begins to text and flirt with a boy he met at the music store. When Blaine discovers the texts and hears Kurt's rationalizations for his recent behavior he's hurt enough to perform "It's Not Right but It's Okay" in front of the entire Glee Club. Kurt's performance of "I Have Nothing" is as much an apology to Blaine as a realization how much his life will change in only a few weeks time when he leaves Blaine, and Ohio, behind for New York City.
This week's Whitney-centric episode includes Rachel, Kurt, Santana (Naya Rivera), and Mercedes (Amber Riley) singing "How Will I Know," Brittany (Heather Morris) and Santana perform "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)," Joe and Quinn perform "Saving All My Love for You," Santana and Rachel sing "So Emotional," and Artie (Kevin McHale) and Mercedes lead the New Directions in a final performance of "My Love Is Your Love."
Relationships and loss are the central themes which are brought forth by the celebration of Houston's music. In terms of performances this is definitely one of the stronger episodes of this season, and they are balanced by dramatic scenes with Kurt and his father and Will's intense desire to move up the wedding to include the Glee Club. We even get Puck (Mark Salling) getting a little misty-eyed over saying goodbye to his bros, and a nice scene between Rachel and Santana reminding us how much these characters have grown over three seasons.
