After taking a a few weeks off for its Winter hiatus Glee returns with a pair of love triangles, a wedding proposal (or two), and a humorous send-up of "Summer Nights" from Grease. As Will (Matthew Morrison) sets his sights on asking Emma (Jayma Mays) to marry him Artie (Kevin McHale) gets a new admirer (Lauren Potter), and Finn (Cory Monteith) makes an important decision about his future.
Love, and heartache, is definitely in the air. Sue (Jane Lynch) becomes inscensed at the news that Coach Beiste (Dot Jones) eloped with her on-again off-again boyfriend Cooter (Max Adler). Sam (Chord Overstreet) discovers winning back Mercedes (Amber Riley) to be harder than he thought and even decides to join the swim team in hopes of impressing her.
To make his proposal perfect Will enlists the help of the Glee Club, but the return of Emma''s unsupportive parents (Don Most, Valerie Mahaffey) which comes close to derailing Will's plans. After sharing his plans for the future Will enlists the help of Finn's mother (Romy Rosemont) and Burt (Mike O'Malley) to try and impress on Finn the consequences of joining the military straight out of high school by forcing him to face the truth about his father's death.
As is the show's trademark, the first episode after a break is overflowing with plot and music. Becky's storyline worked better than I initially expected, I have to admit her inner English narration was a nice touch, and I love her final scene with Sue. Will's proposal is way over the top, but definitely fits the show, however, it's Finn's question to Rachel in the episode's final scene which will provide fallout for the next several episodes.
Aside from "Summer Nights" we also get performances of "Wedding Bell Blues" by Emma, Sue and Coach Beiste, Artie's mashup of Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger" & The Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash," Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Rachel, Santana, Mercedes, and Tina, Usher's "Without You" by Rachel, and Rihanna's "We Found Love" by Rachel and Santana (with the help of McKinley's synchronized swim team).
