While Detective Carter (Taraji P. Henson) finds herself in the middle of an Internal Affairs investigation Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch (Michael Emerson) investigate the numbers of four seemingly unrelated strangers (Melonie Diaz, Helen Coxe, Bridget Regan, Jeremy Beck), the first of whom is already dead.
Although at first the strangers seem to have nothing in common, each has come into a large sum of money after witnessing a car accident involving the son of a Congressman (Michael Murphy). It seems the foursome found a large sum of money and drugs in the young man's car and the men whose money the kid was transporting have finally come to collect.
As Reese does his best to keep the remainder of the witnesses alive, Carter is approached by a government agent (Michael Kelly) with ties to Reese's past who wants her help in bringing his "old friend" in from the cold. The picture he paints of Carter's vigilante is a ruthless killer on the edge who could snap at any one and at any time.
The episode's final act brings Reese face to face with his past and puts Carter in a pair of difficult decisions as she first betrays the man who recently saved his life and then allows Finch to transport him to safety after he is shot by the CIA.
"Number Crunch" is a strong episode that finds multiple characters put in positions where they are forced to make hard decisions, sometimes against their best interest. There will be plenty of fallout when the show returns from its winter break including answers to how much Carter will learn about Reese and Finch's partnership and how far she will go to keep them safe.
